This is the SEC and in this conference defense wins championships. Chavis' defense is soft and he has never really shown that he can beat a Saban or Meyer lead team with his defense or an evenly matched Spurrier team. I just think his defense may keep us in games, but will not win us games and will not win us a championship. I think we will be UTenn of the 2000's with Chavis' defense.

I agree 100%

Check the stats of last year. We sucked arse.

Are you really worrying about the defense this much??? Consider your intelligence and integrity in question

The D was legit last year

Oh really?

LSU was 27th in defense...

LSU was 46th defense against the run...

LSU was 29th against the pass....

Lets take a look at getting turnovers on D.

Oh my! 89th!!! Out of a little over 100 teams...
Thats WITH the best CB (Peterson) and perhaps best safety (Jones) in the NCAA.

How about tackles for a loss:

Wow...41st!! Kent fricking State kicked our arse in the dept and had almost twice the tackles for loss! Not to mention powerhouses such a Nevada, Tulsa and Florida Int ALL having better stats than LSU.

How about sacks??? Thats an area we always do well in!!

Oh no! 87th!!! Maybe this year we will play better and can pass San Jose State and Toledeo in the sack charts....

3rd down stops? Oh we rank 38th behind such monster programs as Tulsa and Middle Tenn.

Hell, we gave up a first on 3rd down almost 40% of the time!

Last stat: Red Zone defense:

We come in at 43rd in the nation...

La Tech was 32nd! Middle Tenn and San Jose State all beat our arse in red zone defense.

So what do YOU base YOUR opinion on?? Because it sure isnt facts!

From his LSU Bio:

"Some of the highlights during his career with the Vols include leading the SEC in yards allowed (236.6) and scoring (14.3) in 1996; two years later during their national championship run, the Vols ranked No. 2 in the SEC in total yards allowed, passing and rushing yards allowed and scoring defense.

Tennessee was first in the SEC in rushing yards allowed in both 2000 and 2001, holding opponents to 74.3 and 85.3 yards, respectively. The Vols again led the SEC in rushing defense in 2005, limiting opponents to 82.5 yards a contest. Since the 1995 season, only Florida has led the SEC in rushing defense more times (4) than Tennessee (3).

Despite a 5-7 mark in 2008, Tennessee’s defense was not only among the best in the SEC, but also one of the top units in the country. The Vols ranked No. 2 in the SEC and No. 3 in the nation in total defense, allowing 263.5 yards per game. The Vols were also No. 2 in the league and No. 4 in the nation in pass defense with 160.4 yards per contest."

Doesn't sound all that bad to me, but each to our own.

WRONG
2007:
Total defense: 283 ypg, ranked 3rd
Scoring defense: 19.6 ppg, ranked 20th
pass yards given up: 2384 yds, ranked 17th (LSU played 1 more game in 2007 than 2009)
Rush yards given up: 1340 yds, ranked 18 (also 1 extra game than in 2009)
Interceptions: 23, ranked 5th
sacks: 40, ranked 18th

2009:
Total defense: 327 ypg, ranked: 28th
scoring defense: 16 ppg, ranked 12th
pass yards given up: 2309, ranked 27th(one less game than 2007)
Rush yards given up: 1610, ranked 42nd (one less game)
interception: 13, ranked 41st
sacks: 21, ranked 82nd

As you can see, 2007 defense was better in every statistical category except points per game.

False BS. We were worse in our championship year of '07 than last year, and our stats last year hardly "sucked arse."

Pessimistic LSU fans are some of the most clueless around.

I stand corrected in the every category comment, but PPG is what matters most period. So we were certainly better last year, especially when the differential is 3+ points.

Disagree with my early exaggeration, but I will take a LSU D that allows less PPG and wouldn't give up score after score in OT. PPG is what matters most, and last year's D was better.

(And that isn't even talking about how much worse our offense was in 09 than 07, which makes last year's defense all the better comparitively.)

Owned that I exaggerated? Yes. 2009 defense was still better than 2007, which was my point. Period.

2008 vs. 2009

Rushing Defense - 110.15 - 133.38
Pass Eff. Defense - 116.62 - 108.45
Pass Defense - 215.38 - 194.23
Total Defense - 325.54 - 327.62
Scoring Defense - 24.15 - 16.23

Sacks - 2.15 - 1.62
Tackles for Loss - 5.77 - 6.23

So using the website that you used as a source, the differences between Chavis and the year before he got there was negligible in every aspect except that we allowed EIGHT POINTS PER GAME less than we did the year prior..

Who knows? Maybe if the defense isn't on the field for 45 minutes every game, we'll see the yards given up drop as well.

I may be mistaken, but if our offense was worth a crap last year, we probably beat Florida because our D handled them better than just about anyone else.

Heck, the D has to deal with being on the field a lot more because the O was 112th out of 119 teams in D1, which is miserably pathetic. Hence, the D had to stay on the field more, and probably got a bit frustrated with the lack of offensive production. All of that could easily account for them wearing down toward the end of the year.

Imagine - if our offense could, you know, move the ball - we might have finished at least 10-2.

And you could legitimately argue that if our offense was worth a crap last year, we might have beaten Bama too. 11-1. Recall we were up 15-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

And without the brain fart at Oxford...well, there we are at 12-0. And it's perhaps us, and not Bama, playing UT for the title in Pasadena.

None of that can be blamed on the D. The O is the primary problem.

Wasn't Chavis the DC for the Tennessee national title team in the late 1990s?

ETA - The answer is yes. Google is my friend. And the year was 1998.

I knew someone would say that. The difference is that team had Travis Henry, Jamal Lewis, P. Price, Will Overstreet, Al Wilson, Deon Grant and Shaun Ellis to name a few. They beat #2 Florida in OT 20-17, Syracuse 34-33 and #10 ArKansas 28-24. Hell, even Kentucky scored in double digits on UT that year. Also, the SEC has changed drastically since then with better talent and better coaching.

Along with the stats Rodman posted, we were also 8th in the SEC in getting off the field on 3rd down. Just so you know, Ole Miss, Florida and Alabama were top three.

That limits the offensive opportunities and our chances to score. I'm not saying the offense did much with those opportunities last year, but even if we did have a good offense, how often would they get the ball?

I just hate the soft defensive team we've become!

I wouldn't use this as an example. Florida's offensive gameplan was as vanilla as I've ever seen in an effort to protect a QB coming off of a concussion two weeks prior.

The rest of your post is legitimate though, our defense played well enough for us to win every game we played.

Maybe some of those teams with better sack numbers, red zone, etc don't play in the SEC...

Good point chilge1. But - we still played well enough defensively to win that game. We only put three on the board. They scored 13, and the TD was on a clear offensive PI with a pulled jersey allowing the WR to get open.

The D was not the problem.

We sucked before he got here. The last good defense we had was under Bo.
