A committee, however, is different.
With the Coaches and Harris polls, members are located all over the country. They never convene, and instead submit their ballots online the night before the polls are released.
A committee, though? That convenes, discusses, and deliberates over important decisions? Members, in such a scenario, can be bought. They can be influenced. They can be removed and replaced.
Exactly correct. We are talking about a sport where there are numerous documented instances of rabid boosters and crooked coaches paying tens of thousands of dollars to woo high school recruits who may or may not contribute to actually victory on the field. How much would these same nefarious individuals be willing to pay for the vote of someone who will certainly impact the playoff selection? And of course, there are innumerable more subtle ways to influence committee members outside of crass, blatant cash payments.
Why in god's name should the fate of the sport rest in the hands of a select few interested parties who will deliberate in an entirely opaque process behind closed doors?
Without a fixed, articulated criteria, these people could select playoff teams on any arbitrary basis that appeals to them. For example, they could choose a Pac-12 team over an SEC team for the fourth slot because they feel "it's time for someone different to win the championship" or because they perceive that regional diversity might be good for the popularity of the sport. Someone else might choose ND instead of a more worthy team because of some long-buried emotional attachment to South Bend or Catholicism. There are literally an infinite number of completely inapposite factors that could come into play. And these factors won't be offset by a large pool of voters or by computer rankings or by any other objective criteria.
I just think it's nuts.

The committee deal scares me. I like the playoff but, imo, the committee is going to be wide open to politics. And, hope I'm wrong, but I don't see LSU getting benefit of doubt many times. I see this as an opportunity for the sexy schools & coaches like Stoops, Saban, Meyer, etc... to get in even when they don't deserve it. What they should do, is just take the top 4 teams in the polls.

Because ESPN runs college football now
Agreed.
We have seen this in the last couple of years. LSU got in the NC game back in '08 because Musberger & Herbstreet started lobbying at the end of the SEC championship game w/UT and last year, LSU had to play Bama in a rematch cause Herbstreet started lobbying as soon as that game was over.

LSU is 2nd to only Okla in wins among BCS schools since 2001, they lead the SEC in wins, they have 4 SEC titles, been in 5 SECCGs, been in 5 BCS bowl games, been ranked in the Top 8 of the nation 7 times, and played in 3 BCSCGs.
I don't think you can get much more "sexy" than that.
We have been viewed nationally as an elite for much of the past decade and if we continue to play as an elite team, we will be fine in any format. imo
My thinking is, we have a better chance at being a 4th best team than than a Top 2...right?

This committee idea is going to be corrupt and biased as they come.
This is going to be like the years before the bcs all over again.

USC & Bama get automatic byes, everyone else fights it out for the remaining 2 spots.
Yes, USC & Bama get automatic berths in the playoff. Two other teams are selected on merit. Those two teams play each other for 3rd place, while USC and Bama get byes into the NC game and play each other. Loser of that game gets the crystal ball.

With ESPN involved i could see an undefeated Rutgers, Syracuse, Connecticut, get in the playoffs over a one loss SEC team,, we can tell after the first year if this committee is going to work.
