I know it's old and played out, but how long before it is offically extinct? I look forward to that time. Everytime is see it, I picture some guy hunkered over his keyboard thinking, 'This is going to be cool.'

History of faddish words to describe CFB players, since around the late-80's...

specimen (e.g., Bo Jackson)

swagger (e.g., any Barry Switzer-coached team)

competitor (e.g., Barry Sanders)

warrior (e.g., Dameyune Craig)

poised

beast

dominant

explosive

special

Right now I think we're still on "special," although it's a fluid situation and could change at any time.

It's really nice when you can get that "special" player in "space".

In the Pros, with quarterbacks, the term du jour is elite.

I do remember a time when all the NFL analysts would talk about was how a team needed to get a "marquee player" or a "marquee quarterback" to build their team around and put fans in the stadium.

Please note, this is not to be confused with the Marquis de Sade, nor with Biz Markie.

I had a teacher who said referring to a player as a "beast" or an "animal" is racist

I am a baseball purist, and so refuse to even acknowledge its totally unsanctioned transfer to the sport of football.
