Crutch? Is that what you call a 3-pt effort against UF at home? A crutch. Another poster left a compelling analysis of Crowton and his offensive record at BYU, Oregon and the Chicago Bears. You may wish to read it.

The point is that the QB position cannot be compensated for so easily. It is the focus of most CFB offenses. Having an experienced and talented player in that position makes just about everything else on the O easier and helps the D by sustaining drives.

When RP departed, much of the air was released from the LSU offensive game plan and productivity. See for yourself.

No question about it. It is very likely that the STAFF had little choice but to part company with RP. Could not be helped, but it has lead in large part to the current moribund state of the offensive O.
