That is EXACTLY how teams will play defense against LSU.

UM has a nice stable of running backs and a very capabale offensive line. However, they start a young, redshirt freshman quarterback.

Hence, Charlie Strong stacks the box to stuff the run, sits on the short routes, and forces the Hurricanes to throw down the field. So far, UM can't move the ball an inch.

That is precisely how every team will play defense against LSU. Until Hatch or Lee consistently completes fifteen to thirty yard passes, we'll see nine in the box. If you're one dimensional in the SEC, you get suffocated.

I thought both the qb's completed passes. Miami does not have LSU's rb's or offensive line.

But you are right that if they stop the run you got to hit the passes. I think they can and will. jmo

It doesn't matter how fantastic our o-line is. It won't be able to effectively rush the ball against nine top echelon SEC defenders.

We really threw the ball deep successfully last year. It was all those long throws that put us in position to go for it on fourth down. Our offensive line just flat out beat the Florida defensive line. We'll see if the Florida defensive line has gotten better.

Agreed, but good points, if nothing else, it gives LSU a hint of how they will defensive gameplan for us at this point, but that said, we don't play Florida for a month, who knows what will happen between now & then offensively for LSU?

First. LSU is not one d. Lee and Hatch both can throw well enough to get it downfield. Our RB situation is miles better than Miami's AND our Offensive line is one of the best in the country, both first and second teamers.
So, relax. Enjoy this season, it will be a good one.

It can and it will. It did so last year and will again this year. If you want to play doom and gloom, move to Lafayette and join the USL fans. Then your posts would have a small amount of credibility.

I sometimes wonder if people here actually watch the games.

Last year, we ran a very balanced offense and consistently hit deep passes. It was the balance and the WR threat that caused teams to drop their safeties out of the box. They couldn't stack the box because it would leave Byrd and Doucet in single coverage on the outside. Flynn could find those receivers.

I am not "anti-LSU" simply because I point out exactly what opposing defensive coordinators will do to LSU this year.

You have no idea what opposing d-coordinators will do against us because you are an armchair fan, not a coach. I love all the gameplanning experts on this site who end up being 95% wrong. You guys never seem to come back and admit you were wrong when LSU makes you look like fools after the game.

Is Miami, which just got points, running an offense like LSU? We still have wide outs that can burn a defense. The pass does not have to be thirty yards, just a slant and catch with a run. Nine in the box leaves two deep only. I think they would loose in that senerio.

First of all, the "you aren't a coach" argument is the worst in history of the internet. If only coaches could make comments or observations on message boards, there wouldn't be any message boards. You don't have to be a coach to make an accurate statement about football. It's football, not the mathematics of string theory.

Second of all, I'll happily come back and admit I am wrong if opposing defensive coordinators don't gameplan to shut down our running game and force Hatch/Lee to throw. I doubt it will happen, of course.

Did you people watch LSU in, say, the latter half of 2002? That was the last time we really had a woeful, inept passing QB (Randall after Mauck got hurt). Teams stacked the box and forced us to throw. That's how we got blown out at Auburn that season.

Good lord.
