If one of Army or Navy were in contention for a playoff spot, that would only impact the two semi-final games and potentially one of the other NY6 games (if one of them were undefeated, a win would put them in a semi, while a loss would most likely put them in one of the other NY6).
You could also potentially impact a lot of bowls. Trickle down effect. If Army or Navy was in playoff contention, you're holding up a spot in one of the playoff bowls to see if Army/Navy gets in. But that also holds up non-playoff bowls too because you may have a Power 5 conference champ who may or may not finish in the top 4, depending on outcome of Army/Navy. So that would hold up bowls like the Sugar/Rose/Orange/etc from knowing who's in their game because the Pac-12 champ could finish 4th and be in the playoffs, which would force the Rose Bowl to select another team or Army/Navy could be the 4th team and send the Pac-12 champ to Rose instead of playoffs. Not knowing whether the Pac-12 or Big Ten champ is a playoff team or not holds up the Rose Bowl from making its selections, which in turn holds up every bowl with a Pac-12 or Big Ten tie in. Same thing would go for the Sugar Bowl if the SEC or Big 12 champ was sitting at #5 with Army/Navy at #4...Sugar Bowl wouldn't be able to make their selection until they knew who made the playoffs, so it holds up every bowl with those conference tie ins.
One would hope that the playoff committee and the bowl organizers have some sort of contingency plan in place in the event Army/Navy game had possible national title implications that could delay playoff and bowl selections by a week.

If we've both been eliminated I don't see why we couldn't play on Dec 03 in Gainesville.
Well, I do know why, but the above statement assumed Foley and Florida aren't too scared to play.
