1. Check out Ridley v. the two flavors of the month who are getting way more pub than he is:

Ridley: Att: 36, Yds: 240, YPA: 6.7, YPG: 120
Lattimore: Att: 51, Yds: 236, YPA: 4.6, YPG: 118
Richardson: Att: 32, Yds: 210, YPA: 6.6, YPG: 105

While Ridley is not a FR, he is playing as the starter for the first time in his career, and only got limited carries last year.

2. There are 3 freshmen on the SEC list of sack leaders. All 3 are LSU Tigers (Montgomery, Mathieu and Mingo). Oh, and No. 1 on the list is Drake Nevis.

3. There are 2 freshmen on the SEC list of tackles for loss leaders. Both are LSU Tigers (Montgomery and Mingo). Oh, and Drake Nevis is on this list too.

4. While our total offense is ranked low in the SEC, rushing offense is ranked No. 3.

5. While total defense is only ranked fifth, rushing defense is No. 1 by a mile (only 44.5 ypg in two games). When opposing teams can't run against you, they pass quite a bit more.

All of this while we were the ONLY school in the SEC to play its first two games on the road and one of only two schools in the SEC to play two BCS conference schools in its first two games (Vandy being the other).

Having read this, I do indeed feel optimistic.

This whole season really hinges on whether or not the defensive line can maintain its caliber of play. We can win any game with a modest ball control offense if and only if we continue to dominate the LOS on defense. If the defense falters, we'll be in trouble, as I doubt the offense is explosive enough to win high scoring games. Maybe that will change.

we know all this, but what about THE QB PLAY?

that's the weak link.

good post though.

I'm just saying the best defensive and running game can only get your so far.

Your QB will have to win you a game or two.

Why do you think everyone is agreeing that if we had better qb play, we would be as legitimate of a SEC champion prediction as any other team out there?

If you just mix in a few completions instead of inaccurate throws, LSU would be at or near the top of many offensive catagories.

We need a decision maker, a leader, and an accurate passer at the qb position and all will be right! We just do not have that at this time from JJ and prob never will, IMHO

though steady QB play is obviously an issue, they dont need to be spectacular for us to win, just dont make mistakes.

Ridley broke his leg last season? When?

I agree that neither JJ nor JL have recently given any fan optimism that they will perform at a high level. However, they both have at least shown in the past that they are capable of putting the team on their backs and leading it to victory in adverse circumstances.

I'm thinking JL on the road against Auburn as a true freshman and also leading the team to 37 unanswered points in 16 minutes to avoid the monumental upset to Troy. I know it was Troy, but, hey, I'd rather come back against them and win, you know. And that was a ton of points in very little time.

I'm thinking JJ against Ga. Tech when no one thought we had a chance, and then on the road at UGA, one of the toughest places in the SEC to play. He did it again late in the game against Arky last year.

Of course, none of that does us any good this year. But, we know it's somewhere in there. I guess my point is we have to put our faith in these guys because they're the only ones we got. We could put Sal Aunese's kid out there or the Baton Rouge product, but these are the only two with experience in SEC play.

Sorry, I was thinking of Murphy against Vandy. I was just thinking Ridley didn't get a lot of carries last year and this is really his first time to be the "man."

Yeah, I guess that's my point. If I'm going to be good at something, I'd rather it be running the ball and defending the run. You'll be in every game you play in. It may be ugly pretty often, but I think we'll all take the wins.

What's frustrating to me and I think to many others on the boards is the fact that we have so many weapons on the offensive side of the ball and we want to see them score every time we have the ball. But, that just ain't gonna happen. Plus, I think as long as Ridley has the hot hand, we still want to keep feeding him the rock.

What has to be encouraging to all Tiger fans is the fact that it looks like our D-line is rising up to pre-2008 levels and the O-line is really starting to look like it's gelling.

I love the trenches. That's where the games are won and lost.

Bama played Penn St.
USCe played UGA.

And we played nobody, is what the nega-tigers will say.

That's fine. Let them say it. If we start 5-0, they'll say we played nobody. Miss. State is terrible. West Virginia almost lost to Marshall. Tennessee got blown out by Oregon. Blah blah blah.

I did fail to mention that the two leaders in rushing in the SEC are Tauren Poole at Tennessee and Cam Newton at Auburn. Auburn has all those big time running backs and their QB leads them in rushing. Ridley is third.
