average would be a better term...but most college QB's play marginally against the higher ranked teams

Mauck
JUNIOR SEASON (2003)
Player that combines excellence on the field and in the classroom ? Named Second-Team Academic All-America this year, while also being named Second-Team All- EC ? Put together one of the finest seasons for a quarterback in school history, throwing for an LSU record 28 touchdowns and 2,825 yards in leading the Tigers to a school- record 13 wins and the school's first national title in football since 1958 ? Led the SEC in pass efficiency by connecting on 229 of 358 passes for 2,825 yards, 28 TDs and only 14 interceptions ? Threw at least one TD pass in all but two games for the Tigers in 2003 ? Tied the school-record for TD passes in a game three times with 4 scoring tosses vs. Western Illinois, Louisiana Tech and Arkansas ? Had two 300-yard passing games, going for 305 vs. Western Illinois and 311 vs. Louisiana Tech ? Tied a school-record by completing his first 14 passes vs. Louisiana Tech ? Tied another school-record by completing 17 straight passes over a two-game span earlier in the season (final 10 passes vs. Arizona, first 7 vs. Western Illinois) ? Set the school record for single-game completion percentage at 90.0 percent after connection on 18 of 20 passes vs. Louisiana Tech ? Returned to action in a non-contact role during the spring and responded very well ? Had an outstanding spring, one that saw him develop more as a pocket passer ? Had already mastered the art of scrambling to avoid the rush ? Exactly what you want in a quarterback in that he's tough, smart and talented ? Makes good decisions on the field ? Has good size, a strong arm and quick feet ? Is not going to be chased down by a defender ? Not afraid to tuck the ball and run.

Matt Mauck either.
So you're waiving our 2003 and 2007 BCS championships (won under the "Matts")?
Otherwise, I don't understand what you are saying.

He won all but one of the games.

according to Saban, Mauck really made a difference in getting the team out of bad plays at key moments. Also, the bubble screen that was so effective that year was a read play. Mauck wasn't a great QB, but sometimes you have to dig a little deeper than the stats to find how players make a difference. To this point JJ has been efficient by design, if he can fix a few issues, he'll be a real good one. (although some of this is predicated on an OC change, I don't think he'll flourish at all under Crowton)
I'm not posting his stats to try to bash the guy. Him and Flynn are 2 of my favorite QB's of all-time. Mauck was also one of the best tigers off of the field. He wasn't a "game manager" though like many make him out to be. He made big plays and big mistakes. Against UGA he made a huge mistake with the fumble and followed it with one of the best moments in LSU history. He was exactly what the team needed, but he took a lot of chances from behind center

he was a liability in several of those games, he padded his stats against some very weak teams

The Dinardo Era explains a lot....

You are saying that Mauck "padded" his stats against "weak" teams??? What did JJ do against "weak" teams this year, or did we not play any "weak" teams??
Posted on 12/1/09 at 6:42 pm to sug314
every QB pads stats against lesser teams, Mauck was just better at it because he was 23 at the time, a JR with experience, had one of the best defenses all time, and a great running game. 2003 probably had one of the best if not the best olines in LSU history. Mauck was a championship QB, but JJ can do anything Mauck can do IMO

too soon to tell...at this point JJ isn't close to Mauck at managing the game (and I'm not talking about the "game manager" stereotype). But JJ probably has a physical edge over Mauck.

It's sarcasm you moron - but you're in good company. Let me spell it out for you again:
There have been a lot of threads about how JJ is not a championship QB. Truth is, WHILE FLYN AND MAUCK DID WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR LSU, neither were obviously championship caliber before their championship seasons. Regardless "it's the defense stupid".
Subtext: The best offense in the country is Houston (not sniffing a title). The best defenses are AL and FL. Where are they playing again?
