It always had that name, but no one ever used it, or even knew about it. After Katrina, the bridge began to get lots of publicity, and people started using the name more. But ever since it was built, it has always been the "New Bridge" to distinguish it from the old, Huey Long, U S 190 bridge up by Southern.

"The Horace Wilkinson Bridge" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue like "The New Bridge" does.
