One interesting aspect of that game was that Notre Dame went into the game undefeated and ranked #2. Even though they won, they fell to #4 after the game.

The Tigers went into the game with one loss, ranked #7. After losing they rose to #6.

I can't remember who it was but somebody said that was the first REAL fb game Joe Theisman ever played in!

I know Coach Parsegian stated later was his fondest game because he had never been in such a tough defensive game. Too bad the drop by Tommy!

My parents went to this game, and they still say it really sticks in their mind like very few other games.

Whatever pictures you can show us would be fantastic - these are really quite a find.

Nobody is talking about the bogus pass interference call that set up the winning FG for ND. The game film clearly shows that our DB made no contact with the ND receiver. I'm still pissed about that. We paid 'em back the following year in Tiger Stadium. We totally whipped their arse.

I'm not saying that never happened but since it wasn't on tv and I don't ever recall it being an issue or even mentioned by anyone until now, I have to wonder where it came from.

But yeah, I do remember revenge being an issue in '71.

Never heard this mentioned before.

I always read it was more or less the dropped interception in the endzone that set up the field goal.

Dug around and found a couple of more:

Believe this is the play before the pass:

This is some of the Tiger fans before the game:

It looks like the end zone actually has "TIGERS" painted on it?

Only cuz you beat me to it. It was 3rd and long.I was at LSU and they had the old Gym Armory set up with folding chairs and a giant screen. It was crazy. People were cheering and booing like they were there. Ronnie Estay DT led the D, which was AWESOME. My take was that since ND could not move on us, that the refs won one for the Gipper. I also have not forgotten, obviously. Payback was SWEEEEEET! Andy Hamilton

I believe the DB was John Nagle? Anyway, we had awesome defenses in '69, '70 & '71. I think ND was favored by 14 pts. I made some nice pocket money on that game.

The main thing I remember about the 1971 game was my mother explaining to me how special it was that LSU made a goal line stand against ND when ND had the ball on the "one-inch line." Since I was only 6 I don't remember much else. Kind of funny thinking how psyched my mom was about that.

Great link.

The pass interference is also mentioned in Bud Montet's write up of the game in the Advocate, reprinted in Greatest Moments in LSU Football History:

quote:

Irish Field Goal Defeats Tigers, 3-0

By Bud Montet
The Advocate

South Bend, Ind. - Nov. 21, 1970

The "bowling" Notre Dame Fighting Irish had to take advantage of a pass interference and a possible interception in the end zone that was dropped to take a 3-0 victory over the LSU Fighting Tigers in the final two minutes and 54 seconds, keeping their win streak going at nine in a row.

. . .

Here's the account of the game in 50 Years of College Football:

quote:

Notre Dame 3 Louisiana State 0; Ferocious classic D struggle finally was won by Notre Dame (9-0) on K Scott Hempel’s 24y FG with 2:54 to play. Undersized LSU (7-2) held ND’s nation-leading O to 227y, which was 313y under its avg. Fighting Irish runners could claw for only 78y, 231y below their game avg. Tigers maintained season-long streak of allowing no rushing TDs, while sacking Irish QB Joe Theismann 6 times. Indicative of prowess of both Ds came early when Irish HB Denny Allen was belted and LSU DB Jim Early pounced on FUM at ND 31YL, but 3 plays later Tigers were 4y farther from GL and had to punt. LB Dick Picou soon stopped Irish surge to 3 YL with FUM REC. Bayou Bengals 2-way HB-DB Tommy Casanova received national acclaim by holding elusive Irish E Tom Gatewood to 4/21y receiving, none in the 2nd H. Outstanding K Mark Lumpkin missed 2 FGs for LSU, including block by Irish DE Bob Neidert, which, after ND DB Mike Crotty’s RET and Gatewood’s spectacular FUM REC from hands of 4 Tigers at ND 26YL, set stage for P Jim Yoder’s punt that pinned LSU at its own 1 YL. Resultant good field position after Tigers’ punt from their EZ led to Hempel’s winning FG in late going.

It was truly one of the really great college football games in history.

The only defense that can compare to the '69 thru '71 group would be the '03 NC defense. The game in '03 is a lot different from the game in '69 thru '71.
