re: LSU Linebacker Problem?

That looks pretty solid geauxtiga.
imho I still think Riley gets the start at one of the LB positions and Clemmons only comes in in situations to "spy" on certain players the way Ali did last year. As far as the CB position, I think Jai has got to have an edge as far as PT experience where PJ, PP, and Brooks basicly have zero PT.

We have never really got any real great linebackers to sign with LSU ever. I wonder why?

The good thing is your not relying on young players. Riley and Sheppard have been in the program for 3 years now and know the system.
Shomari Clemons looks the part, can he pick up the system, he has been in the program for a year. Then you don't have to throw Theriot and Baker to the wolves. You let them emerge on special teams. Jones gives you a lot of versatility also.

I seen them in Spring and I don't really have a concern for talent as much as depth. Riley is going to be a good one, if his foot is fully healed and Kelvin is a big hitter. We're fine. Plus we have some young studs for depth now like Baker.

Just in recent history Trev Faulk, Brady James, Ryan Baker, D. Beckwith, L. Sanders, E.J. Kuale, Kirston Pittman, Ken Hollis and Cameron Vaughn were all highly recruited (4 star) LBer prospects that signed with LSU.

And how many are/will play in the NFL?

Cutera was a 4 star, but he could be the slowest LB in the sec.

Faulk was a legacy, of course he was coming here. James will a little more of a pull, but that's when the WM flood was occurring. Beckwith was across town. Sanders, at kind of the end of the WM flood. Hollis and Kuale were JUCO. Pittman never played LB, though he has been an excellent player when healthy. Vaughn was a nice pickup out of the New Orleans area. Baker just signed. (I think that Prater, not mentioned, is also a nice pickup, and Ali Highsmith was a rare out of state, highly recruited LB for us) The fact that we can discuss all of the significant LBs in one short paragraph just proves the point. I would need a whole page for the RB and WR picks we got, and we only play one and two respectively, at a time, whereas we have three linebackers on the field at a time, and bunches of LBs play special teams.

Brady's a starter for the Cowboys. Faulk has been a journeyman ST's player much like Kuale and Vaughn.
Beckwith will be in the NFL as will Pittman(as a DE)
The question however was why we couldn't get big time LB prospects to sign, not how they turned out.

But here's my thing, just playing devil's advocate. I think having talent and being a big hitter are close to worthless attributes to have for a college linebacker. I'll take instincts and toughness over talent anyday, except when it comes to blitzing and pass coverage, and it's not like LSU has historically been good at using LBs for blitzes or pass coverage anyway.
And given LSU's talent on the D-line, the need for talent at LB is even further reduced. We just need guys who don't make mistakes. I don't want to see linebackers making great, highlight-reel plays. I want to see linebackers filling gaps, and closing gaps by taking on blockers at the proper angle and at the proper point of attack. I don't want to see linebackers flying toward the sidelines hunting down a RB. I want to see linebackers who already have the offense's RBs outflanked, forcing them to turn inwards and get creamed by a big fat defensive end.

Considering we lost:
No.7 Ali Highsmith = a proven leader and always around the ball./ Going to be hard to replace but I believe Perry Riley is aggressive enuff to fill the void.
No.35 Luke Sanders= servicable but not as aggressive or athletic enuff 4 the LB position/Kelvin Shep or Cutera or Baker would be a upgrade @ this position.
Beckwith/Riley/Shepard will be just as good if not better than LB corp we had last year.

If I were a LB stud coming out of HS, I wouldn't sign with LSU, because LSU's defensive schemes are atrocious for LBs.

And I disagree with this philosophy. I don't care if they project to play in the NFL or not. Are they or were they good (or great) football players for LSU. Trev Faulk is a great example... even he would admit that his NFL career is a relative disappointment. He did start 7 games for the Rams, and registered 63 tackles. Even if just for a couple of years, he lived a dream that most of us would like to have. However, none of that alters the fact that he was a slobberknocking (that's a technical term, meaning that he hit really, really hard) LB for LSU. He hit people so well, that some of them are still telling the story.

I agree. Beckwith is the only one I feel confident about. The rest are inexperienced, injury prone, and young. Cutrera is slow and misses alot of tackles. Riley and Sheppard just havent played enough. You will see Jones step in alot like Landry did early in his career and fly through the line.

Does any one else feel that MCCray should be a linebacker instead of getting burnt as a defensive back. I bet that would be the best fit for him.

Five stars.
We get them everywhere else. Just odd.

I agree Rodman. I doesn't seem we have recruited a linebacker yet for the 2009 class. What gives?

Also their defensive schemes aren't atrocious for LBs since they got rid of the drop linebacker from the '90s.
