I guess you'd have to be specific about which poll you consider on the level of "Good Housekeeping".
Alabama has national titles by polls that most people consider legitimate. The problem is there is a difference between being the best team in the nation, or a playoff winner, and holding a poll title. And since the criteria for the polls differ, some of the polls contradict each other in naming their champion.
1941 is clearly ridiculous to claim. Some of the others, like 1964 and 1965, depend on whether you acknowledge the poll according to the rules at the time. If you refuse to acknowledge any poll that awards its champion before the bowls, then you have to throw out a couple of Alabama's claims. But in the process, you have to throw out some legitimate champions as well.
As I said, it's not very clear cut. I don't go around saying "We have 14 championships!" because I'm uncomfortable with the claim. But that doesn't mean "None of the Gumps titles count!!!" either.

"playoff winner"? You mean, like, being in a conference with divisional play? Then, winning said division, thereby qualifying for the conference championship game? Winning said championship game and being rewarded by having to play a rematch against an already defeated opponent?

As a college football fan I can respect teams that have great seasons. There are many years pre 1950 where there are 4 or 5 schools claiming a title for one year. Championships Before 1950 should not be counted due to the fact that people voting had considerably less access to the teams outside of their region than they have now ( which people still complain about). This is why the AP poll took 12 years to be nationally accepted and was the first to earn that claim. I also agree that with the coaches poll earning national acceptance that the possibility of a split national champion is valid ( until 1998 when Division I decided to recognize the BCS as champion)Bama would still lay claim to 9 titles post 1950 and has every right to claim them. Bama is not the only offender to this as Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State and a few others do this as well. Bama is just the only one in the SEC that does this. By Bama's standard LSU would have 8, Auburn would have 4 etc.

Who is the only team to play for the title with 2 losses?
Div Champs
Conference Champs
Our schedule > everyone in front of us. (the beat down we gave Va Tech on national tv launched us into the NC game.)
Anything else?

I mean like, winning a playoff by whatever criteria you select the participants. I understand why you are irritated that Alabama got another shot, but excluding teams because they didn't win their division or conference is not something done in any of the other major sports which do have a playoff.
As to the titles, I don't get riled up about it. I can understand questioning a number of the titles Alabama claims. I question 1966, where Notre Dame was awarded the title over an undefeated Alabama based on nothing but media bias . It's one thing to say "we were unquestionably the best team" and another to say "we won the title." We don't have 14, in my view. We have a lot. And most importantly, we have far more than auburn.

quote:Eggsactly. Bama wasn't worth a chit that year, and we still made it to the title game with TWO LOSSES! The idea that we need a strong Bama is silly. I stand where I stood earlier, and where I have stood since I was 10. I want Bama to lose every game they play, I want them to walk into Tiger Stadium winless, and leave how they came.
