Yeah, we had 7 or 8 homers that game I think. The 98 team lived and died by the homer. After we beat MSU, I though there was no way USC could beat us twice. Once that wind changed (we all had to go buy winter clothes) and the ump started giving USC the WAY OUTSIDE strike, it was all over.

Remember the article the Omaha World Herald sports writer wrote? The CWS is better with LSU in it!

it has always been that way up there .. my first CWS was 1993 .. i have always been amazed at how EVERYONE is aware of the CWS in omaha .. you walk in a gas station and they tell you "welcome" and ask who you are there for .. and .. as you saw .. omaha is a huge fricking city .. that makes the awareness even more impressive to me ..

I don't doubt it. I've spent so much time (and $) up there since 1997, I have some good friends I'd like to see again. Last year some Omaha friends came down here to see LSU play at The Box.

People who have never been and experienced it don't really understand how true this is.

yep, it was that 21-14 USC-Arizona State championship game that launched all the sweeping bat changes in college baseball ..

Yes. I will also say that I detected some anti-LSU sentiment that year because the "Gorilla Ball" was frowned upon by the baseball purists.

Once again' you can't expect to win it every year. I will be at the CWS sporting my purple and gold and pull for a team from Cali. LSU: 6 Naational Championships

No, it was LSU setting the all time record for Home Runs in a season. It will never be broken.

that is what i heard from friends up there that year .. that it was the first and only time they didn't feel warmly recieved up there .. of course, USC wasn't much better and we found out years later that mark pryor was on the juice in that series ..

I, like you, have been up there enough to notice a difference. We were still warmly received (and no doubt still the favorite), but not as much as the other years I've been. There was some grumbling about the whole Gorilla Ball thing.

Did Prior pitch up there in 98? I don't remember, but you may be thinking of 2000. When Hawpe hit that HR off of Prior over the RF bleachers that looked like it would hit the zoo!

no that was a nationally televised championship game and it was the game the NCAA pointed to when the changes were discussed ...

Hawpe raped Prior and USC in 2000. Two 3-run bombs.

I love Jim's calls on both of those. Some of the highlight videos on youtube has a lot of his calls from CWSs.

There is no "probably" about it. We will not be there. We just don't have it this year.

98 was the year the wind changed and our HRs were suddenly warning track outs.

i was there for 97 and 98. yeah that 98 series was crazy. we hit 9 homeruns in the first game against usc and then it gets cold and windy for two straight games against usc.

fwiw i talked to mrs karen and she was wanting to ahve a special kind of LSU get together this year if we made it, she had even mentioned coming down to a football game at one point, but never made it.

It really is a shame if we dont make it, cause that was some of the most fun ive had.

Aside from 100 degrees and raining it was wonderful.
