When you need short yardage to get in field goal range and you have a running back you've been riding for two years that can possibly get you a touchdown, you DON'T call a pass play. Especially when you've got a line that can't protect the quarterback - the same quarterback who could not convert a third down until late in the third quarter.
So yes, I'd say that was a coaching problem.

Les is known for pounding the run and trying to control the the clock, and when that's exactly what we needed, he called a pass. Yes, some would have said it was smart had it been successful, but Wisconsin could smell blood and were hungry. Turrible call
