Except of course Alabama, which has played in 7. (BCS + Playoffs). Only FSU, Okla., OSU and Clemson can match this record, putting LSU in an elite group of 6 teams that have dominated the BCS/Playoff era - No other team can claim more than 2 appearances. I find this interesting, because despite this record, given how evenly spread out LSU's appearances have been, it doesn't feel like it. IMO, this makes LSU's NC games more special for the fans, and gives the team the 'underdog' chip heading into the game, despite LSU's 'elite' membership in this exclusive group of six.

NOTE: If you expand this to include the Alliance/Coalition years going back to 1992, you can add Florida and Nebraska to the group, and increase Ala./FSU's count to 8/6 appearances. (I'm not counting Miami's 1994 and Nebraska's 1997 appearances given what happened those years)

LSU was elite from 2003 through 2011, maybe 2012. This is the first year since then, though.

So: Alabama, FSU, Okla., Ohio State, Clemson, and LSU have 4+ appearances in the title game.

No other team can claim more than 2 appearances.

Great stat. Thanks for posting.
