Most independent preseason polls had LSU 4th in the SEC and 3rd in the west. Seems to me that the talent we were judged to have by those outside Louisiana judges did as well or better than expected.
So, if he takes the program so far down that we're picked to finish last, but then we finish 10th, that'll indicate good coaching? The real question is why our program fell to the point where we were picked 3rd in the SEC West to begin with?
And there's also something you overlooked in your statement above. Preseason polls didn't just judge our talent to predict where we'd finish, they also judged our coaching.

The SEC has been down the last 2 years
Then why in the world has a team that entered that two-year period as the defending national champion and 5-year elite powerhouse only gone 8-8 in the SEC during that time?

Yes, that includes LSU.
Obviously. The question, though, is why? Why did we suddenly go down so far and so badly that we can't even win the majority of our SEC games when the SEC is down?

Outside of Florida and Alabama, what team is good in the SEC rigt now...by SEC standards
Nobody, which makes it inexcusable that we have lost half our SEC games over the past two years.

Finishing third in the SEC is kind of hollow
You see something hollow with a 3rd place finish after a 7th place finish the year before?
Due to that 3rd place finish, LSU gained an invite to the best SEC bowl outside the BCS. That doesn't seem like a hollow accomplishment to me, but each to own.

Yes, yes I do. You don't? You happy with a third place finish in which LSU obviously was not the third best team in the SEC?
Did not UF, Ole Miss and Alabama beat LSU? No matter the statistical outcome, LSU was NOT the third best team in the SEC. Not from what I, or the majority of people saw with their own eyes.
I am not satisfied with 3rd-4th. Are you? Not after winning a NC.
Les Miles has unwillingly contributed to the expectations of the program. Top ten recruits, A NC three years ago...a four million dollar salary.
Expectations for the average fan are higher than your expectations.

I agree, we are not fighting for the first two spots in the SEC. As long as we get the third spot we have met our expectations.

Finishing third in the SEC in 2009 was about like finishing third in the presidential election in 2008. Yeah, someone finished third, but who cares when there's such a wide gulf after the top two?

I don't think it's mediocre at all. If bama and florida meet in the sec title game again, and whoever wins gets to go to the BCS title game, I do not mind being third in the SEC along with the best non-bcs bowl.

All very good questions....we just have two very different opinions of what the answers to these questions are.

That's your opinion and you are welcome to it, but the final SEC standings show LSU finished in 3rd place whether or not you feel they were not the 3rd best team.

Well, since fans don't have to put our any effort to reach their expectations for the team, I can understand them having lofty expectations.
They might want to temper those expectations since LSU has won the SEC 10 times in 80 years and a NC 3 times in 100+ years, but each to our own.

Gotcha. Don't aim high, you will be disappointed. Aim low, be pleased. Unfortunately for Les Miles, he helped set the bar high. At 4m a pop, his target increased exponentially in size. You can blame Les Miles, his early success and his elite salary for the higher expectations on the program, under his administration.

You mean like Florida 2001? "Mos Def" LSU lost to Tenn., Ole Miss & of course Florida. UF had 2 losses all season, 5 points away from a perfect season.

fan expectations were far different in 2001 than they are in 2010. Not remotely close.

Exactly! LSU was simply not as good a team Florida was in 2001. In fact the UF Team was rankeed #3 in the Nation. Saban was never close to Spurrier's level at Florida.

Who gives a damn about Saban and 2001 LSU? Its 2010, for christ sakes.
LSU football will be, and needs to be where it is now, not relative to a previous era. 2003-2007 is how future LSU football will be evaluated. 2001 LSU football was coming out of the dark ages. 2010 LSU football is not there, yet.

So, if Miles is such a great recruiter, how can we only be the 3rd best team in the West?
