Kevin steele would be an awful hire. Has been a loser everywhere he went.

All I need to know about Kevin Steele to stay far the frick away from him. That and giving up 70 to WVU.

quote:

In Steele's first season (1999), Baylor finished with a 1–10 record (the school's worst since 1969). During the 1999 season, Steele's Baylor team was involved in what ESPN.com called one of the top 10 worst coaching decisions, in 1999, when he chose a running play rather than a kneel down with his team leading and possessing the ball in the game's final 12 seconds and the opponent (UNLV) out of timeouts. The ensuing Baylor fumble and UNLV return for a touchdown gave the Rebels a shocking win.[4]

So he allowed a walkoff defensive TD with the lead. What an assclown.

Ron Cooper was a pretty bad head coach also. He was HC at three destinations and his best season was 7-5 at Alabama A&M. Miss State's defense was pretty terrible when he was their DC. Some coaches are just masters at their specific trade but aren't any good outside of it.

I was thinking about this last night. I agree, but don't know much about him.

LSU: You can add another name at LSU. I'm now hearing that Nebraska defensive backs coach Corey Raymond could emerge as a strong candidate for the defensive backs job.

I would take Zook or Steele. Both are ace recruiters. Steele at Bama and Clemson and Zook at Florida and Illinois. If it is true that Chavis had some part of the coaching of the DB's, then this would help as well. I wouldn't be opposed to either of them. Now not for the DC job, but a position coach yeah.

Oh yeah, cause I mean obudan has les miles phone tapped......Zook may see this as a chance to win a title and 1 and done to another school.....we will see.

He currently doesn't have a job and he currently won't get a better talent pool to choose from at lsu vs a million other teams.

yes, but Steele has never coached DBs aside from a short stint at Tennessee. He isn't qualified.

Most guys who were successful coordinators don't go back to being position coaches.

I'd be very surprised if Zook took the position.

Raymond wouldn't be a bad hire if we couldn't get Zook. he has done a great job in Lincoln.

I would love for Corey to come home. How good of a recruiter is he?

Just one more name to throw out there, Terry Joseph from Tennessee. Groomed Eric Berry and several other NFL DBs.

No he didn't. He joined Tennessee's staff in 2010 as DB coach and this offseason was demoted to safeties only. He is a very good recruiting coordinator because he is so organized, but he is not a great recruiter by any means. He is only a notch above Larry Slade, who is the worst position coach I've ever seen at Tennessee, as a teacher.

roon zook would be a huge boost in recruiting. i don't think he would be a very good db coach though.

I don't see anything wrong with Chavis helping decide who to hire.

I agree. Also, I suspect it was Chavis that selected Cooper when he was hired. I'm sure Chavis is given a lot of freedom to select who is on his staff. Miles should be careful to do pretty much anything Chavis wants. With the kind of offense LSU had last year, I'd hate to think what it would have been like with out a super DC or special team's coach. But I trust that Miles knows how to go about it (giving Chavis a lot of freedom), or the program wouldn't have been this good at this point.

BTW, if Steele were the guy, I do wonder about the disaster Clemson's defense under him in the Orange Bowl. Giving up 70 points. What's up with that?

Carlton Buckles has been coaching dbs in high school and college for about twenty years, he not only played LSU, but he coached there as well. Buckles coach for a short period under Dinardo, as a asst db coach.

I don't know how well he can recruit, but he is a very good football coach.

I'm an early advocate for Corey Raymond.

Zook changes jobs more than the current Bama coach, which is saying something - he also hasn't been very successful since the 90s.

I'd be okay with Kevin Steele for linebackers coach, or even a possible future DC, but I almost have as much experience coaching DBs as he does (and I don't have any). He did coach DBs for Tennessee for 2 seasons.
