quote:. Well I guess it depends on how you define " stupid numbers". Considering that LSU has had some pretty good QBs play here in the modern era (Jones, Hodson, Davey, Russell etc) and Mauck holds the season TD record, I'd define that as a stupid number.
All you proved is that NO LSU QB has ever put up stupid numbers. Landry Jones put up stupid numbers for OU last year. Matt Mauck managed the game and played within himself, and let those around him make him look really good.
Just for comparison, Mauck's 28 TD passes compare favorably to several recent heisman winning QB's TD passes: Troy Smith (30), Leinart (33), Tebow (32), Newton (30), Palmer (33), Eric Crouch (25 total TDs), Weinke (33).

quote:Great. Now you're gonna compare him to a bunch of QBs that had higher numbers than him, and a guy that CLEARLY won the Heisman with his legs in Crouch?

Not sure why this is such a debate. As I stated, I was simply pointing out to the Duck fan that the SEC doesn't play that kind of game. He stated he didn't even remember who Campbell was. My point, Campbell was an undefeated SEC QB...and BCSNCGs aren't determined by gaudy numbers.
I pointed out what I consider to be stupid numbers. Landry Jones had nearly 5000 yds last season!! That...is stupid numbers.

Crouch (25 total TDs)
quote:Looks like the guy accounted for Crouch's rushing TDs in the total TDs number. So apparently Mauck threw for more touchdowns than a recent heisman winner ran and threw for combined. If you are not impressed with Mauck's 28 touchdown passes, especially when compared to Heisman winners, then you must have very high standard for what constitutes a crazy touchdown number.
a guy that CLEARLY won the Heisman with his legs

Good grief some of you are dense. I'm impressed as hell by Matt Mauck. His numbers were more than enough, and should JJ come CLOSE to those numbers, we'll hoist the third crystal in less than a decade!
That said, the point was TO THE OREGON FAN that...in the SEC, and particularly at LSU...we don't require stupid numbers (meaning 35-45 TDs and 3200-4800 yds) from a QB to win it all! DAMN!
I even specified exactly what I considered 'stupid numbers' with Kellen Moore, Luck, and Landry Jones as examples from last year. I even pointed out that...as stupid as their numbers were, none of them have ever hoisted the trophy.

Returning to the original thread - can Krag duplicate Borges - truely appreciate Krag's words, but he hasn't been here long enough to have a sincere "love" for LSU - gut says he can get it done - hope history repeats

I would hope that between Krags mentoring and JJ just growing into the role, he can become not necessarily THE reason LSU wins, but instead becomes the man that doesn't cost wins/hurt the offense.

you DO realize Mauck set the LSU record for most TD passes (28) in a season in 2003 right?
That's correct...but let's look at that a little further.
Prior to 2003, Matt Mauck was known primarily as a running QB. In 2002 before he took the leg injury at UF, he had thrown for a mere 782 yards in 6 games for 9 TD's...and this was with Citadel, Miami Ohio, MSU and USL in that 6 game stretch helping to pad the stats a bit. Truth is, prior to the start of the 2003, the only thing we had ever seen from Mauck under center was a scrappy, scrambling QB who looked like a winner.
It wasn't until fall camp in 2003 that it became clear that the passing light had come on for Mauck, whose delivery seemed to change and that was because he was going to have to rely less on his legs and more on his arm. Point is, Mauck didn't put up those numbers until his final year...and before them he was known to LSU fans as a run first guy. For Mauck, it seemed to take an injury to get the light to go on...maybe for Jefferson it's the addition of Krags to the staff?
In Jefferson, you don't need 28 TD passes, as he still has his wheels. All you need is for the light to have come on for Jefferson (as the coaches seems to be saying it has) like it did for Mauck and you can have a QB under center that makes fewer mistakes and an improved passing game to go along with his threat to tuck it and run.
Over the past decade, we have seen LSU QB's get better in their 3rd, 4th and 5th years...from Booty, to Ro, to Russell, to Flynn...the track record shows that we ought to see an improved player. As with every position on the field, the proof is in the pudding and we'll see if it's true soon enough. Until then, I'll be optimistic using history as my guide. I gain nothing by talking the guy down in August other than personal angst over something I can't control, and the sad ability to potentially say, "I told you so," if it turns out he doesn't improve.

You guys do realize that Jason Campbell is the exception not the rule? There have been a hell of alot more bad senior qb's who stayed bad or improved just modestly than there have been Jason Campbell type improvements!

quote:Comparing Jefferson to Mauck makes no sense. You are trying to act like the light finally came on for Mauck in his last year, thus the same could happen for Jefferson. Problem is, the facts are not analogous.

Prior to Mauck's record setting JUNIOR season he had only started 6 games. Jefferson has started 27 freaking games going into his senior year.. 27!!!!! With no signs of improvement. He actually got worse. You can't compare Mauck with him AT ALL.
quote:NONE of those guys had anywhere near 27 starts before they showed improvement. Hell, none of those guys even started 27 games in their careers.

Don't bet your house or even your used lawn mower on anything close to a Jason Campbell Senior season.
