Kind of surprised Hellmers made it through roster cuts.

I say this because I don't think he was on the active roster for the CWS last year. Got announced with the training staff during the ceremony and not the team. Thought it was weird at the time.

I think this speaks to 1 of 2 things--likely a combo of both. 1) Hellmers has developed, and though he might not have top end stuff, it has ticked up a bit and he has enough command of it now that the coaches feel comfortable putting him and trusting that he's going to throw strikes consistently and at the very least, be trusted to be an innings eater. 2) Our pen is so lefty heavy, that we need any RH relievers we can to be trusted to one and throw strikes. That they're not quite sold on being able to count on higher end stuff guys like Little and Moffett just yet, and they don't expect Shores to be back this season. (I think the deadline to set the roster was before the 1st game, and I'm assuming they left him of)/

Our pen is very lefty-heavy, and we need every available right-handed arm to balance it out a bit. Even if it's only as an innings eater or to come in in a close game and get a high-leverage matchup-up out or 2 in a mid-inning situation.

He did have a pretty good preseason run. Put up some of the best numbers on the team
