re: Butler Scouting Report

If LSU does beat Butler and play UNC there is one advantage LSU may have againstt UNC if they can make the most of it. Its that UNC does struggle at times against great scoring guards. All of UNC's losses were against teams that had a player that scored at least 20 or more pts. Another thing is that although Hansbrough is very good offensively along with the other frontcourt players, he is not too imposing defensively. He is not a real shot blocker like J. Varnado was to us. He's more likely to contest shots than block them. If LSU can make shots against them and play defense, they may hang with them, otherwise that is a tough draw for LSU if they make it to the second round and play them.

Great post, cajun. Thanks!

Their toughest matchup for us might be Matt Howard. He's 6'10" but is a real scrappy kid. He outworks everybody in the games that I have seen. Lots of offensive rebounds and putbacks. Chris Johnson will have to fight Howard for everything.
Howard is listed at 6-8 on the ESPN roster. Does some other roster say something different?

Most of what you said is true, but Howard's only 6-8. I think the most interesting matchup is something that a lot of your fans have already posted up but it'll be who guards Tasmin Mitchell. We've had Veasley guard guys like Evan Turner before at Ohio State who's 6'8 and he did a fairly decent job against him, but we definitely won't put Hayward on him.

Uhh, That roster also has him at 6-8 and the tallest player is 6-9.
:confused

I didn't say he wasn't 6'8" but simply posted the school's official roster.

6'10" is what I recalled from the pregame intros. I sure hope that he is closer to the 6'8" that the schools programs list. The one thing that is sure is that he's their post player. The more I think of it the more I think Johnson can handle him down low. I believe Johnson is actually more of a shot blocker than Howard is.

Here's my own personal rundown of the Butler Bulldogs:
Starters:
Guard - Ron Nored - 6'0 Fr. He's really started to play a lot better as of late. As with most freshmen point guards, early in the season he would turn the ball over WAY too much, but is good at slashing to the basket and can get to the FT line where he has also improved immensely, but is still somewhat of a liability
Guard - Shelvin Mack - 6'3 Fr. He's probably the best playmaker on the team, very good at finding an open teammate. For the recruits we normally get, he and the rest of the freshmen are incredibly athletic. Good rebounder for a guy his size. Streaky shooter, but has been in a slump in the latter part of the season.
Forward/Guard - Gordon Hayward - 6'8 Fr. He has the potential to be the biggest matchup problem in the lineup. Usually just kind of floats around during games and can either disappear or score 10 points in a row. Was in the top 10 in our conference in darn near every category they have. Very good shooter.
Foward - Willie Veasley - 6'3 Jr. Best athlete, usually gets saddled with the opposition's best forward. A good rebounder for his size. Can sometimes be a good shooter from outside, but is good at getting dirty baskets.
Forward - Matt Howard - 6'8 Soph. Best and really only consistent inside presence. Has played well against 7 footers before, but I don't know if any of them are as athletic Johnson, but they were definitely bigger. If he gets touches the team usually plays better. Sometimes gets in foul trouble.
Bench Players:
Guards
Zach Hahn - 6'0 Soph. Good shooter, has a weird motion but is effective. Probably the best scorer that Butler has off the bench. Can sometimes make silly turnovers.
Shawn Vanzant - 6'1 Soph. Loves to play defense and can jump through the roof. Very streaky from deep. Just quick in general.
Forwards
Garrett Butcher - 6'7 Fr. Has really developed well during the year. Isn't a post presence offensively, but does score on putbacks and has a nice midrange jumper, though like Hahn, does look kind of funky.
Avery Jukes - 6'8 Jr. He's been injured as of late, but is really Butler's second best post defender. Occassionally can get hot from the outside. Strongest kid on the team.

You got to be kidding right???
UGA, Alabama and Kentucky are lined up to offer the great J. Brady their HC position.

From what I've seen, it might be a rough one, but I'm looking forward to the matchup, it will be interesting for sure. We've had problems with SEC teams the last 2 seasons, so hopefully this year will be different!

LSU just has to keep the pace uptempo

When I found out, we drew Butler I was a little pissed but now that I've researched them a little. I feel somewhat better. I don't feel that we blow them out of the house, but our athleticism should give them fits. The Xavier they played and the Xavier we played were different teams. My research is just a basic scan of the games and from watching them the other night.
Marcus Thornton if he's the same Marcus Thornton that can hang 30+ then he can and will. Taz should be able to drop 15-20. And if we can play good defense. We should win. I know that's a John Madden type of statement.

Yea I think we definitely should win this game.
ETA: But then again, I definitely thought we would beat Purdue the last time we were an 8 seed.

Here's another possible example of Bradyball:
LSU vs UAB in 2005: Definitely thought we would beat them. Still don't fully understand what happened in that game.

Tack Minor happened.
But whatever, I always loved him.

the xavier and davidson wins are very impressive... especially considering they are road wins... but on the other hand they have what look to be some bad losses...
Posted on 3/15/09 at 10:28 pm to tigeraj22
They do have some bad losses, but they are a young team (5th youngest in the nation based on player personnel) so there will be inconsistencies. If it's a big name team or a team that people feel they shouldn't beat, they tend to get up for those games and play pretty hard. I would hope that they get up for this game being as it is their first tourney game (for this team).
