Bo Rein was hired after the '79 season to replace Charlie Mac. He was to fly back from S'port to BR in Jan. '80 (recruiting trip). I believe Stovall kept most of his staff that first yr.
He was from Ohio, and played at OSU. I remember being pretty excited about his hire.

The link's summary is certainly enlightening. I remember everyone was excited about the new hire. His pedigree, combined with LSU being know for a rushing football team, might have made a lethal combination.
Arnsburger gave us a brief respite along with two years of Dinardo ball before Saban and Miles brought us into the Golden Era of LSU football.
Let's hope the era did not end with the 7-5 2008 season. I certainly do not think it did.

My bad. But I never thought it was "Arnsparger."
Closer than the Bo Raynes, though.

There is another interesting connection between LSU, Bo Rein and Ohio State where he played. Ohio State has a continuing tradition at the end of every season where the team votes to award one teammate the "Bo Rein Most Inspirational Player Award.
The first winner of the Bo Rein Most Inspirational Player Award...Bo Pelini.

It would have been very interesting to see what Bo Rein would have done with the Tigers. It seemed like everything and everyone was lining up for Rein to have a great run as the new LSU coach. After the accident, the program lost its direction and the long ride into mediocrity was upon us. Be very thankful for what we've had since 2000.

He was also very tight with Lou Holtz and was engaged to his daughter. Heard from a person in attendance at a luncheon at Arkansas that he stated that he hated LSU for the lost of his soon to be son-n-law.

Bo Rein was head coach of LSU for 42 days. This is the only image I remember seeing of him with his LSU pin.

Bo Rein had two children. 13 yr old Linea Elizabeth and 9 yr old Kristin Elaine. They were both in Raleigh with Rein's mother the night the plane crashed. Mrs. Rein was in Portland, Ore. visiting her parents the night of the plane crash. The path of the plane that night passed almost directly over his mother's home.Air Force captain Zoerb said the Cessna Conquest 441 ran out of gas, 41,000 feet up in the air. Zoerb went down and made a pass where the plane hit. There was no signs of the wreckage--just an oil slick.
