How Mississippi Insurance Agent Came to Own Prized Pigskin is an article in Insurance Journal's website.
An insurance agent in MS came into possession of a 1958 LSU game ball that is signed by the team. It is one of a very few, at most.
The current possessor--I will not concede that it was properly transferred state property--would like to have the football appraised--for tax reasons no doubt--and donate it to LSU. Who does appraisals of those things?

That isn't the only 1958 signed football. I got to hold one at the 2004 recruiting bash at the Sheraton Baton Rouge and it wasn't owned by anyone that lives in Mississippi.

Ha! The value is what someone is willing to pay for it. If you look at the picture I posted, those footballs do not look like those of today (other than the shape)

There are individuals who do nothing but appraise sports memorabilia. They take the value of similar sports items, such as other signed footballs from that time, and use there sold value to determine a price for that particular signed football. They're not always correct but most of the time they're very close. Of course, something is worth what another person will pay for it and so that might be more or less than the appraised value. I am a personal lines insurance agent so I deal with people getting items appraised all the time. They do this so they can either add that item to their home owners insurance so it is covered in the event of a loss or get a special policy just for an item or items.

first off, if someone offers you $10,000 for any signed LSU football, you'd better damn well take it...and run...
Honestly, I don't think '58 signed footballs are all that rare....I would take it to the Andonie Museum on LSU campus and they should be able to provide the best info around...
they display one hell of a collection of LSU atheletci artifacts...they have a collection of balls dating back to pigskin stuffed with feathers!
