News to me but I graduated in '01. What's going on?
The biggest thing is CAMD. It is a synchrotron (a type of particle accelerator) that is the ONLY one in the world funded and run by an university. There are only 3 other university associated installations but it is more of a geographic connection than a full access one like CAMD.
There is a lot of high dollar research dollars that comes into CAMD and by extension LSU. In fact right now it is down thanks to the federal stimulus package as they upgrade it with a new "wiggler" which will make it the most powerful university synchrotron in the country.
Martin has expressly stated that he doesn't agree with these type of high end science facilities and considers them a complete waste. On the surface he is trying to shut it down because of budget concerns (he plans to take out a 1 million shortfall on CAMD), but then he turns to a deaf ear to the university's cut of the profits....some chemical engineer was awarded a federal grant of 12 million dollars that depends on CAMD, and the university takes half of that straightaway. That 6 million would be enough to run CAMD for years and it is already coming to LSU...but Martin ignores this and many other CAMD exclusive grants. In a budget crisis he is saying no to millions of incoming funding.
LSU folks even had fairly high ups in DoE in Washington fly down here in person to appeal to Martin about CAMD, stating that it is a facility that improves LSU's stature nationally and it will hurt the university immensely both fiscally and reputation wise if it is shut down...Martin doesn't give a shite. (And I can personally vouch for this....I have lost count of the times that I have seen packages for Ivy League researchers that came down here to use it.)

Shouldn't we always strive to be better than we currently are?
You bet!
Good luck in your effort to do that and I hope both teams play well with no injuries.

Awww, man, why'd you have to take the high road? Now I kind of feel bad. Not too bad, admittedly, but a little bad. Okay, then, best of luck, ULL.
But...
