'03 was better than '07 and '07 is probably better than '09 (just a guess), but they could surprise me and that would be a good thing. Keys; linebacker play and the kicking game. Helton could make or break our season. Whatever happens...geaux tigers.

Agreed.

I'd think our keys will be DL and QB play. Agree about overall importance of Punter and special teams in general though.

does the 2009 talent level come close to 2003 defensively?,
no

does it come near the overall talent of 2007?
offensively, possibly. defensively no.

but those 2 teams imo, had rare, amazing talent that will be extremely difficult to match

2003 we had Webster, Spears, Gay, Hill, Laron, Travis Daniels, Lavalais, Prude, Lionel T... and they were all being coached D by Saban + Muschamp.

I'd say it is very unreasonable to think it will be better than that group. It won't even be close.

Agreed. The 03 defense was on another level. No one could do anything against that defense. The thing about the 03 defense was that the entire secondary, Webster, Daniels, Landry, (maybe Hunt?) could handle one on one coverages with recievers. Which pretty much allowed us to blitz like hell.

I think it's reasonable to expect a dominant defense in 09, but to expect another 03 type defense is a little too much.

Talentwise, LSU is totally stacked...the biggest ???? is LB

This year's team has the potential to be better than the 2007 team. From a talent and coaching standpoint, the defensive backfield will be better than any year since 2003. The question mark this year is the D-line and perhaps the LBs, although they should be great as well. I'm encouraged by the changes made in the off-season, and I really believe that the improvements on OFFENSE will help the DEFENSE post much better numbers.

You do remember the 2003 defense, right? It will be a tall order for any unit to top what they did on D that year. That was a special group.

Agreed. I cannot wait to see how this unit plays together.

Agreed. Its been a long time since our DL was as young and unproven as this unit will be. 2006 was pretty young overall as well, but they ended up being fantastic. Hopefully this unit will respond the same way.

Agreed again. I think Coleman making the move to LB could propel this unit to greatness. Riley is very good, and I think if Cutrera isn't ready to step up, he will lose his job very quickly to Sheppard who I think was very solid last year. Add young depth with Baker and Minter and Chavis' coaching and this could be the start of LBU at LSU.

2003 def. was better than 2007 def. in my opinion. 2007 team won it all with alot of heart! (ex. Jacob Hester). I can only hope that this years team is just as good as either team. I'm an optimist...I say we win it all!!!!!
