1. Hire middle management that's smarter, younger and more up-to-date than you are and manage to achieve greater success, with the risk that they may attain greater power in the organization than you have.
2. Hire middle management that's limited in ability and ambition, and manage to avoid failure and keep your position of authority, with the risk that it will all go to hell.
