Im excited for Mingo this year. In his 2nd year of organized football he stands to make huge strides in understanding the game better. He has the athletic talent, he has a good but not great skill set, now he just needs some experience to develop further. I think playing in the secondary will only help him at the LB position in the long run. His weakness is in pass coverage. Seeing the play develop from the secondary will help his understanding of the game.

Im sure he wont be used exclusively at Safety. If he does look for alot of Safety blitzes and nickel coverage. With his athleticism the coaches will use him every way they can to make plays. who knows what will happen star wise. I like the opinions thus far, gives something else to think about and consider.

Do you think Mingo would lose God-given ability if Rivals takes away his 4th star?

Rocket, this is the real point. The kid is who he is. Our coaches will evaluate him based on his ability and upside, not star ratings.

Lynx AND Clean

My question is would "YA'll" take Mingo because of his "upside"? I'd like to hear your comments since both of you are not "too" high on him and I'm kinda surprised. I know you don't actually have a vote in this but, I'd really like to hear ya'lls comments as I respect your opinions.

Nah, Rocket. No recruit would lose any talent just because of a star ranking. I think you know that. Its an evaluation thing, which is very subjective at times. I Just like to hear others opinions on how they evaluate him and whether that evaluation will coincide with the recruiting services evaluation. Talent is talent and will be seen by coaches. The stars just give us something to talk about and a means to measure players against something.

Not either of those guys you asked for, but I personally know many of the coaches at West Monroe and they have had some beast LBers and defenders in general come through there, and they light up when talking about Mingo. If they feel he's the real deal, then he is, period. They don't bs when it comes to players, pretty straight shooters, good guys. Mingo will be in action in a scrimmage in a few days, then at the Bayou Jamb next Saturday. I'll be there filming and looking at him and several other guys from up here that will be playing that day. There should be a lot of reports coming out after the Jamb as many people in the know will be there.

FWIW...i sat at a table next to his last night at an event in WM, i was shocked at how thin he was. he definitely has more of a safety frame than LB. to me, he looked more like 6'3", maybe 6-4, and maybe 200-210 lbs. very lean, ripped, more of a thicker basketball frame than football player. IMO, he has a long, long way to go before he can survive beatings in the SEC as a LB.

Mingo is not a safety, he doesn't move like one. He is a linebacker trapped in a safety frame though. I fully expect after he spends 2-3 years under Moffits system he will bow up into something great. Laron Landry was a twig coming into HS and look what Moffit did with him...yes I know Landry was a safety project, but the point is still valid.

He has long arms and doesn't struggle getting off of blocks, that helps him. He deserves a 4-star, but not top 250. He is a project.

Trio: I sure hope you're right, I'm hoping that he becomes a beast in a few years, @ LSU of course.
