Playing time--plain and simple.
If you had the talent of a Seastrunk or a Lattimore, and you didn't already have a "dream school" that you wanted to play for(such as Russell Shepard with LSU), then why not go play on a team where the coaches are hailing you as the "savior of the program"?
Let's face it--Auburn football is hurting a little bit these days.
Those two guys would probably be guaranteed the majority of reps the moment they stepped onto the field at Auburn.
Now if they want to win--say--an SEC Championship, a BCS bowl, or a National Championship, and they aren't worried about a little competition, then LSU will get serious consideration.
They'd both still get their time to shine and, based on recent history, would both eventually be first day NFL draft selections.
But to get back on subject, all of these kids have their own agendas. You-know-who Jackson chose to sign with Tennessee, albeit in treacherous fashion, in order to further his father's career. So even if he doesn't make it to the NFL, his father will be taken care of--for the immediate future anyway.
Just another reminder that unless a young man has a love affair with a certain school, he will choose to sign with the team that can "promise" him the most of what he thinks he's looking for.
In this case, as it is in most, it's playing time.

so why isn't Hawaii more enticing? you'd think every kid would want to go there and play.

AU has everything to offer right now. A top program in the best conference in the land that is often in the media spotlight. A program that churns out NFL players and has traditions and a gameday crowd that is second to none (I've been to every large SEC stadium at least twice, LSU 6 times, and AU on gameday is as good as ANY). Couple all this with coaches the players relate to and playing time on a team that still has the talent to be good right now (AU average recruiting ranking the last 5 years is still top 12-15 in the country) and AU has as much to offer as anyone. Maybe more to offer as playing time quickly is huge. If you were a top recruit with NFL aspirations to set yourself up for life, would you rather sit the bench behind guys that are just as good but maybe a year or too older, or would you rather hone your skills and be seen on the field in the game? Just like any career, experience is critical and the experience on the practice field is like experience in school and not as valuable to a future employer.

I always thought bammers were a bunch of toothless rednecks, but LSU fans apparently have them beat

there are at least 4 other teams in the SEC with programs in better shape located in far superior college towns/cities, which is basically the point of this thread. if you factor in alabama's seeming dominance of the state for the foreseeable future and a head coach with one of the worst records of any BCS level coach, who was actually booed by auburn fans when hired, it's definitely enough to make you wonder IMO

A guy on bleacher report ranked the best football stadiums in the SEC last year. He ranked Jordan Hare Stadium ahead of Tiger Stadium

Here comes a rantard meltdown. How dare somebody utter the words that another stadium on this earth is better than Tiger Stadium

People on this board claim Auburn is such a shithole, but the property values in Auburn are also much higher than property values than Baton Rouge and the crime rate in Auburn is also much lower than Baton Rouge

where is the statistical information proving this? I know the property values are higher in BR than Houston. My house in BR would cost about $50K more.

off topic, but SLOW DOWN
LSU was not his dream school. if UT offered him a shot at QB he's in Austin, Texas right now

"top program" is stretching it
how many SEC titles the past 10 years? how many trips to the SECCG?
AU, at best, is going to be #3 in the west. if nutt keeps the ole miss pain train rolling, they could very well be #4 in the West

if you want to go pro, you go to the program who puts more pros out, especially at your position
if LSU churns out more top picks after having them sit, then their method is better than immediate playing time
