Recruiting the offensive line in 2022 will be particularly important due to the following:

-Expectation of losing 4-5 starters from this unit after 2021 season,

-Lackluster O-Line haul in 2021 (in terms of quantity), &

-Out recruited at this position by Bama, Georgia & Texas A&M during 2018-2021 time period.

Fortunately, 'O' & Cregg are off to a great start for the 2022 OL class with verbal commitments from Will Campbell (No. 33; 5*), Lucas Taylor (OG, No. 356, 4*) and Bo Bordelon (OT, No. 506, 3*). And while a strong start is nice, a strong finish would be even better as it's possible for 2022 to be the best OL haul of Orgeron's tenure. Below are my thoughts on how I hope to see LSU close out the O-Line class for 2022.

1. Close on top-200, 4* Emery Jones (OG) - Of the 12-13 uncommitted prospects from LA with an LSU offer, E. Jones has to be one of the most coveted by LSU. The dual-sport athlete (basketball/football) is 6'4", 325 lbs., and I've frequently read that he's a plus athlete for his size. He exhibits great footwork on the football field, yet surprisingly light on his feet when it comes to the hardwood. Jones projects as an interior lineman (OG) at the collegiate level with potential to transition to center (OC), if necessary.

It's been well-documented that E. Jones is close, personal friends with LSU commits Walker Howard, Will Campbell & Bo Bordelon, and these guys have been vocal about the fact that they are pushing for their buddy (Jones) to join them at LSU. Furthermore, it's not surprising that Emery's family and friends would love for him to attend LSU, making it much more convenient to connect and remain active in his life. Lastly, 'O' and Cregg made EJ a priority long ago, as they were one (1) of his first offers back in the summer of 2020. Naturally, Orgeron and LSU have been in pursuit ever since. For these reasons, I whole-heartedly believe Emery Jones ends up a Tiger.

2. Protect the talented nucleus of OL 'verbals' - Assuming a successful close on E. Jones, the Tigers will have verbal commitments from four (4) talented offensive lineman. IMO, this would be a great nucleus of O-Linemen that could set the stage for LSU signing one of the best OL classes of Orgeron's tenure. For that to become a reality, however, 'O' & Cregg must stave off the competition from flipping any of these core guys. Lucas Taylor, in particular, will probably receive a strong push from Auburn to stay home &/or it wouldn't surprise to see Bama apply pressure later down the stretch (see Jaeden Roberts as an example).

Perhaps surprisingly, I'm less concerned about Campbell, Jones & Bordelon being flipped because of the close-knit bond shared between this "band of brothers" (even though they will be pursued by numerous programs until the end).

3. Sign one (1) more Offensive Tackle (OT) from OOS - To me, steps 1 & 2 are important aspects of a strong finish for the 2022 OL class, but this last part (No. 3) is vital to meeting team needs and locking up one of the best OL classes in program history - signing another true OT. I use the term "true OT" as a description of a 6'5"-6'7" prospect that projects as a collegiate tackle versus a converted guard. Of the four (4) OL commitments mentioned above, only W. Campbell is projected as an offensive tackle at the collegiate level.

Based on everything I've read to-date, LSU is in the mix for a number of OT prospects that could meet our need at this critical position. They include:
a) Kelvin Banks (TX, No. 31, 5*)
b) Julian Armella (FL, No. 137, 4*)
c) Malik Agbo (WA, No. 196, 4*)
d) Fisher Anderson (TN, No. 239, 4*)

I think interior is just as important as OT this year. Emory Jones is key plus a strong side tackle.

Also agree with body types comment.

Xavier Hill comes to mind as an outlier for RT. He’s got the frame for Guard but the moves for RT.

Hoping Ben bordelon adds 50 to his 265 if he’s going to play inside. However, if he grows an inch or two then does he have the skill set to play tackle? I assume not since it’s said over and over he is a G/C with his ability to leverage but I still have bad thoughts about 6 foot 7 Ethan Pocic getting cantilevered by some 6-4 bama DT all game.

However, UGA has been having an unprecedented run at oline for half a decade now. They have some 6-6 guards too.

Herman Johnson wasn’t a bad guard at 6-7 was he? nor was
Josh Williford (whom I think was well on his way to being very, very good before a concussion).

*Trai Turner was 6-2 or even 6-1 in hs as a three star g. But he was able to get under some of those 6-2 to 6-4 330 lb DTs in college.

Great post. Is LSU out of it for Tyler Booker? LINK / is another top shelf OT that i'd like to see in purple and gold. Also, i wouldn't be against 6 OL in the 2022 class, but i'm not going to get greedy. 5 is a solid #.

I like 5 this year just so we aren’t robbing from other positions. I wouldn’t mind 4-5 for 2023 though.

Not saying Rosenthal and Wire all sec, but one could leave early Along with Deculus, Ingram, Hines and shanahan.

Pretty sure Tyler Booker was CB’d to Florida by Wiltfong the other day (whatever that’s worth?). I haven’t heard anything on him and LSU, though.....

Does the staff plan to offer the big tackle from St. Aug?

It would be nice if he blows up and we keep 6 foot 7 talent in La.

I have not heard the first thing about an offer to Cam East yet, husslemane.

However, I believe the staff is continuing to evaluate him and I’m betting he will be invited to summer camp so they can get eyeballs on him (assuming camps will, in fact, take place this summer).

If we have camps this year, and they liked what they saw, maybe they’d offer him.

Agree with all of this, dstone.

Couple comments in response:

1. Bo Bordelon - despite the “interior OL” projections from folks that know more about football than myself, I hope Beau ends up at right tackle. He is 6’5”, and I believe he will be able to get to 305 pounds by sophomore year. While I’m unsure of his arm length and overall athleticism, I do know he is a master technician of an OL. Hopefully he can develop the strength required for this position and play opposite will Campbell as a bookend on the right side.

Have an upvote. Good post. I also wouldn't mind if we added Cam East either. I think that dude can play.

I expect us to get 5, but I would not be surprised if we got 6. We need big bodies.

That's a good take. He's a good looking athlete for sure. Hopefully he makes the first camp which appears to be tentatively scheduled for June 4th ish.

No doubt, RedStick. C. East is the epitome of prototypical size for an OT (long, lean, & wingspan to boot).

They knock on him I’ve read is that he is more of a finesse player with limited pop (as it relates to hand strength) and questionable footwork.

That said, I hope he comes to camp and shows out to get an LSU offer!!

True, yet somehow we have been destroying Georgia.
