Can someone with knowledge of the recruiting process explain the levels of game invites for recruits. I would assume the the recruiting office and coaches would send out invitations. What about services like Varsity Preps and Recruit Louisiana? Do they send out invitations to games on behalf of the schools?

A recruit is usually always welcomed on campus and to home games. These visits are considered unofficial visits and all expenses are the responsibility of the recruit. Each recruit also gets a total of 5 official visits which are by invite only and all expenses, including air fare, are covered by the school and includes all immediate family members. The recruit only gets one official visit per school up to 5 total schools. Usually the recruits top 5 schools.

How does a recruiting service decide who to send an invitation to and for which school? Are they coordinated with the school?

Typically speaking, recruiting services do a very good job or recruiting parents and athletes to spend a couple thousand dollars for their services. their services vary from marginal help to shite. This is true across a wide range of sports.

No, it's the school's responsibility to send out the mail and/or invitations.

I'm pretty sure if a recruiting services solicited, key word there, even for free, an invitation on behalf of recruit the NCAA would consider it an agency relationship (w/o improper benefits).

I know that's not what you're asking... but just in case.

In general the NCAA frowns upon any 3rd party in the relationship. Which does pertain to what you were asking about sending out invitations. That 3rd party can neither speak for the school or the recruit.

This is why 'handlers', i.e. someone speaking for or providing benefits to, a recruit are so sticky. It can be considered an agency relationship for future consideration.

Of course the NCAA hasn't gone that route in a long time. They easily could've with Manziel's "friend", but they chose not to
