I do think he is a good looking prospect and I have NOTHING against taking a punter (should have last year), but I am seriously questioning why it has to be a JUCO guy.

He does look like a solid punter...but with only 2 years to play, that leaves LSU in the hole again looking for someone soon.

Also, while it may help for two years ('09 and '10) LSU still doesn not have a dependable guy for '08.

The punting game is going to hurt LSU this year...it is seriously being overlooked.

If hes working hard and doing everything he can, then I don't think he deserves to go. That's the coaching staff's fault for giving him the ship, you can't just screw a kid's education over because hes not performing how you want. Now if hes being lazy and not doing everything he can, then I don't mind seeing them take his ship for lack of work ethic. But I do agree with you, some more ships will probably be freed up this year. RP and Jones already got the boot, thats two extra ships there. We might be looking at a full class come around February.

I don't like it either, but that's the reality of college football. It happens here and at every other school each year.

If we can get a scholly back by losing one of those mediocre kickers we have now i think its a good decision.

I agree lynx, but, maybe they have their eye on some HS kid right now, but couldnt find one for this classs. Dunno. Its a quick fix, I agree, I would rather a HS player too, but maybe they couldnt find a decent one and this was all they had. We would all like to see those schollies used for the best players. But we really need a punter, seems like a good pickup for now. D. Byrd was JUCO. We love him dont we.

On a different note. You wonder why Virginia Tech is always so good. Well one of the big reasons is Special Teams.

Another way to think about it:

I assume he is that good, if he got a scholly. So I assume he will start next year. Just think of it as him sitting on the bench stuck behind our current punter and finally getting to play his junior year. I mean Matt Flynn only played one year. Plenty of players dont play until their junior/senior year. This is no different. Also, i think the punter's playbook is pretty thin, so it shouldnt take him long to learn it.

I hope it's not true that he got a schollie.

I think you are overlooking the possibility that the staff thinks Alleman is the future, but needs a redshirt year and a couple of years to develop, similar to Patrick Fisher (remember, he started only as a senior). This JUCO guy could bridge the gap.

Trying to make this work in my head, but I can't. Don't like the last two commits, necessarily.

I don't really agree with this. HS punters/kickers are very tough to evaluate. Hell, look at the two we recently wasted schollies on. At least this guy has some college experience even if it is JUCO. Sure, we'll only have him for 2 years but he'll also only tie up a scholly for 2 years so that's a wash and we have a much better chance that he will actually be a decent punter.
