Losing Larry Porter?

I live in the Memphis area, there has been a lot of noise about Memphis letting go of Tommy West after the season. He has a buyout that will put a dent in their budget for a new coach, but they have a little more money available now that Calipari isn't taking it all. Memphis is not a very attractive job because they are surrounded by the SEC (Ole Miss, MSU, UT, Ark, Bama, LSU, and Vandy all within 6 hours), the facilities suck, the conference sucks, and football will always be second to basketball there. As some of you may know, Larry Porter is a Memphis alum, which means he might have a little more interest than some might expect. He is actually the second best RB in school history (to Deangelo Williams). He is also exactly the kind of coach they want. Because Memphis is an urban school, they are looking to get a young, energetic, African American coach, similar to the guy Houston has now. Porter has a reputation as a good recruiter and has connections in LA, where a school like Memphis can probably compete with the directional schools for players. Also, since he is a position coach, he will cost less than a proven assistant. His name has been thrown around a lot on radio and the boards around here. Anybody think he would take the gig? It would essentially allow him to skip a step and get right to being a head coach. If he does, will it negatively effect recruiting, especially in the short term?

Absolutely.

Who is working on right now that we could lose out on if he goes?

we'd just replace him with an unemployed old white guy from the northeast and not skip a beat

I think he would jump on that opportunity. Memphis has a lot of recruiting ability and could be a very competitive team.

porter is one hell of a recruiter, although i don't know about his "head coach" potential
not that i don't think he can do it, but it is a big jump from running back coach to head coach

I agree, but I think Memphis would be willing to give him a shot because he is a good recruiter and his obvious history with the school.
The interesting thing is that a lot of the younger head coaches also serve as OC or DC. Has Porter ever done this on any level? I wonder what type of O he would run. He played in a Pro Style run heavy offense under Chuck Stobart. He has also served under Miles, who prefers running between the tackles. Memphis has been a spread team for several years and has had some successful offenses. I wonder if Porter would call the plays, and if so, would stick with the spread or be more conservative.

Losing Porter would be a huge blow to us. When it comes to recruiting he is your ace in the hole. He always signs the big ones in the clutch.

2pac, Biggie and Kevin Miller all took the kiss of death so Yanowski could be da last Don.

Listen, I am just saying that Don knows that in the bayou haters six feet deep, it could be you or me your girl or your homey.

We need to snap up those guys before they start selling insurance.

Then go get Trooper from AU. Leave Porter alone.

They might ask him. They will probably get in contact with Tim Walton, as well. He was formerly DC at Miami and was Memphis' DC last year. He took a job in the NFL this year. He was an excellent recruiter and did a good job turning around a basement level defense. Another name being thrown around a lot is Gus Malzahn, but I think they are a year too late for that bandwagon. I am still betting on him getting a call from Louisville.

I surely hope not...Porter is our best recruiter and I don't want Miles filling the spot with BBQ buddies like Yano/Robinson...
We need to keep powerhouse recruiters on staff and Porter is definitely one of them...
Yano, Robinson, Crowton and Chavis are all lazy arse recruiters. We don't need another added to the staff.
