Well I just found it strange that the longest field goal and longest punt in school history are the same distance. Usually the punts are 15 yards longer.

It is true about kicking off the ground. Although, to get the scholarship offer they are more concerned with the kickoff ability. This is distance and hang time. You can work with kickers about getting the ball up but you can't teach them to kick a ball over 70 yards. You either have the gift of distance or you don't. There are kickers lined up that are capapble of kicking in D1 as far as FG's go but not all can kickoff big.
I will add that Josh Lewis kicks off the ground well. He played soccer most of his life and he is real comfortable off the ground. He has kicked FG of 55 yards off the ground in practice with very good trajectory.

was that punt 57 yards in the air, or did he just get a good bounce. donnie jones kicked a 75 yarder at catholic, but he got a great bounce.

That field goal would have been good from 60 easy.........maybe a yard or two more.

I hope Dru gives this kid the opportunity for a 60 + yarder before the year is over.

Yeah, mine was 67 in high school but not all of that was in the air. School record was 69 though.

The longest FG for Denham Springs was 49 yards. I could not find any info on the longest punt in Denham Springs history.

My buddy Chris Murphy who went to Denham springs kicked a 52 yd field goal against Broadmoor in 91 or 92, so that 49 is wrong im pretty sure!

Best kickers Ive seen in high school were Chris Keagle from Bishop Sullivan who hit a 72 yard punt and Brad Oestriecher from Rummel. Oestriecher was the state leader with a 58 yarder vs. Brother Martin... Anyways both are now playing on the same team at La. Tech. Solid duo right there.

Robert Graves who keeps all the stats for Denham Springs football says it was 49 and has it published on his web page. Chris Murphy was the previous record holder. I think the webpage is www.rlgraves.com

I wish I knew. I got the information from his mother who was very excited about Justin's performance on the field. I'm in Florida, so I'm not able to attend the games. I will try to find out for you.

Hey, RLewis08, You are Josh's dad. Didn't you play for LSU also and hold the school record for a 54 Yard Field Goal. You were awesome.

I saw the 57 yard kick. It looked like it cleared by 10 yards.

I hope coach miles is watching this kid. He also kicked a 47 yard game winner against Covington with 5 seconds left.

Same with U-High's kicker-a junior who consistently kicks to the goal line and looks to be good on FG's from 45 yards on in at this point. Gun for a leg.

Can he make the transition from kicking FGs off of a block to kicking off the ground?

Thanks for you comments. They are appreciated. I hope LSU looks at him harder but I don't they have plans to sign any kickers this year. We will have to see.

If you are asking about Josh making transition to the ground the answer is yes he can. Infact, he already has. We practiced most of the summer off the ground. In HS football it is best to use the 1 inch block because it helps the snappers and holders to have a better target for placement. It is very difficult for a HS holder to keep the exact spot for a kicker. If you are off by a few inches, it can get ugly. I told Josh the best thing to do for his team is to stay on the 1 inch tee. he wanted to kick off the ground this year and I told him it would not be smart.

Good decision. Let him get his stats and get his scholly. Even though colleges want to see the transition, the best thing HS kickers can do is to stay with the tee and have the stats to back up their accuracy and distance.
