There was a lot on the local radio sports talk today regarding Chavis and LSU. To summarize here are a few of the comments made from local media who have covered the Vols for years and know Chavis real well.

1) Chavis is a proud man and feels he was not handled with respect when Fulmer was let go.
2) Chavis really likes Coach Miles and the way he lets his coaches do their jobs.
3) Their personal take on Chavis is he's a man on a mission with something to prove, even though folks up her don't feel he has to prove anything. He was well respected here.
4) Chavis thinks he has all the talent he needs down in BR and feels by the 2nd half of the season LSU will have one of the top defenses in College Football statistically. Which is what he always had at UT.
5) Chavis feels he made the right decision going to LSU and is very happy to be on Coach Miles staff and surrounded with such deep talent on defense.

I'm guessing Chavis has the game in Knoxville next year circled.
If everything above is true then our defense should be back on top. Not having a high number of give away's by our offense will help our Tigers dominate each week.

I'm pretty stoked about this team gelling and winning the SEC. Reminds me a lot of 2 years ago when we had a lot of question marks going into the season.

I saw Chavis interview went he left UT..he held up his thumb and index finger and said.."There was a piece in the paper when I named defensive Coordinator back in 1994..That's the way I WANT it went I leave.

As much as I get on here and rant and rave about Chavis being BULLHEADED and his "Mustang Package"..Chavis didn't cause a stir..Fulmer on the other hand did..

But Chavis has known to be GRUFF with the media..he once told a reporter to "Get out of my sight" when they guy asked him a question he didn't like.. He also clashed with Rodney Garner and Trooper Taylor and a few other assistants..he didn't care for Taylor wearing his cap backwards and chest bumping the players after a big play.or that was the word out of Knoxville. Taylor was a PRETTY GOOD position coach and a pretty good recruiter..and we know what kind of recruiter Garner was/is..without him we never would have landed Jamal Lewis, Deon Grant and Cosey Coleman.
And Chavis DID NOT RECRUIT while at UT..he was Defensive Coordinator and that was it.
But he also told somebody he walked into a "GOLD MINE" of talent in Baton Rouge..Like I said when Chavis has a PRO BOWL caliber front 7 you aren't gonna line up in the I and get 100 yards..FORGET that..But even when he had Henderson and Haynesworth..Those third and longs would drive you bonkers..Like I said before..MAYBE IT WAS FULMER...We shall see..LSU is LOADED with talent and looks to be very good for awhile.

Again, I don't think LSU is paying one of the best DB coaches in all of college football 300K per year to be a lackey and run an extremely conservative pass defense. If they are, I imagine he will be gone in a year or two.

The db coach answers to Chavis..don't care who he is..They will play like CHAVIS wants them to play.

One of two things will happen. Ron Cooper will continue to coach in the extremely successful aggressive manner he used at South Carolina, which is certainly not the same style that Slade was known for in Knoxville.

Or he will be gone very soon.

And I don't know why anyone would run off a top notch position coach and legit recruiter.

Also, we know Les Miles thinks highly of Cooper because he was interviewed as a finalist for the DC position.

Chavis had two db's coaches..Kelvin Ramsey who left and went to Georgia and Larry Slade..Ramsey came to UT from West Virgina where his Mountaineers led the nation in INTS for two season..Two of the db's he had in the secondary for UT were Dewayne Goodrich and Deon Grant..Goodrich went to Ramsey and Chavis before the NC game with Florida State and BEGGED them to let him cover Peter Warrick man on man..

He shut Warrick down and returned a int for a pick 6! ..Hurt his shoulder before halftime and Chavis went back to playing "soft"..

Slade came in and the db's played just like they did when Ramsey was there..One year we had Gibril Wilson, Jason Allen, Rashad Baker, and Jabari Greer in the secondary..All four are STILL in the NFL..and Chavis still had these guys playing WAY off the receivers..

Another thing..the db's under Ramsey and Slade for whatever reason were POOR TACKLERS..They would never come up and wrap up a ball carrier but most times would come in with their shoulder trying to deliver "the knockout blow" and the ball carrier would just bounce off and gain more yardage..and that was something we saw EVERY YEAR..

Again..The secondary and the way they played and ESPECIALLY when UT had the lead were the only things that hacked me off about Chavis..For three quarters he would blitz like gangbusters.. then back off.

Like the winning drive The Steelers had against The Cardinals...Pittsburgh's offensive line couldn't handle the pass rush and especially the blitz of the Cardinals..They went soft and backed off and "Big Ben and Santonio Holmes made them pay. That's just what you get with Chavis..
