The five-star recruit for Belleville High School has already cemented an impressive legacy among the greats as he’s been to three state championship games and has won two.
In pursuit of his third title as a senior this season, Underwood opened the season on Friday night at Wayne State’s Prep Kickoff Classic by showing off a side of him most might not be familiar with: his running ability
Despite having just seven carries in the game, five of them went for 20-plus yards as Underwood went off for 177 rushing yards and two touchdowns in Belleville’s 35-28 win over Clarkston to open the season.
Underwood also finished 9-of-14 for 90 yards with an interception to go along with the two scores passing.
Underwood’s 55-yard touchdown run with 1:18 left in the game was the difference for the Tigers.
“Honestly, I just wanted to show that I got another gift to show everybody, which is my legs,” Underwood said.
“I’ll give myself a B,” Underwood said of his effort. “I had a bunch of areas where I could have been better at and also (could have) motivated my team more.”
Still, 267 yards of total offense and four total touchdowns is pretty darn good for a B. After all, it was good enough to be named the Belleville’s game MVP by the Prep Kickoff Classic.
“Again, it’s Bryce Underwood putting the team on his back,” Norman said.
Underwood complimented his speed with his vision and ability to make cuts with his 6-foot-3.5, 205-pound frame. On a few of his long runs runs, Underwood would run through the teeth of the Clarkston defense and then either cut his way into space on the outside or simply out run them through the heart of the field.
His performace is more impressive due to the fact he rushed for only 199 yards with seven touchdowns all last season
“You know, he does that at practice,” Norman said. “He goes and he starts moving around and he’s got great vision. He can see the field. He’s just all-around athletic. With his athleticism, we’re going to take advantage of that
