The problem with a 4-3 is that it is run oriented. We face so many spread, RPO, you're playing 5 DBs 80% of the time, so a 3-4 that then morphs into a 3-3-5 on passing downs is more natural - it doesn't really matter if you call the pass rush specialist a DE or a OLB as long as he's getting the job done.

You also need guys with proper technique inside. If you don't have a legit 3-4 NT (we do, finally, have a number of them), then it is better to have 2 tackles in there. But, if you have a NT that can occupy a guard and the center reliably, then you just need guys on the line who can penetrate and disrupt for the second level guys to make plays.

If you can get 2 guys inside who consistently occupy 2 blockers, then you can change how teams play against you.

Yes, base scheme is important, but putting the right scheme to match your personnel is more important, IMHO.
