Are we recruiting toward more of a 4-3 defense next year?

I know Aranda is a 3-4 guy but I read somewhere since the Ole Miss game we have been more 4-3 base and the defense has been greatly improved. I hope we do make the change so we can get more of our great DL recruits on the field at the same time. Jordan Burch is better suited to play 4-3 end also and signing him and McKinnley Jackson would make this possibly one of, if not the best recruiting class ever at LSU. Can you imagine a starting DL:
RDE: Burch
DT: Jackson
NT: Guillory/Ika
LDE: Roy

If Shelvin comes back, I’m hoping we run more 4-3. Having Shelvin next to Ika, would be an elite interior. It would allow time for our young pass rushers to gain experience.

I don’t think Shelvin comes back after the year he’s had and nor should he. NT rarely get drafted high but he has the chance to be a top 60 pick.

If we get Jackson, I agree with this. You have Ika, Guillory and maybe Shelvin as true NT's. Jackson is not very tall for DE, but he would be perfect in the interior next to a true NT. Roy could also play that second DT spot.
We could have more talent inside than at DE. If that is the case, roster would dictate more 4-3.

We’re still recruiting for a 3-4 defense

Webb and BJ are 3-4 OLBs

I disagree completely. Guys like shelvin are rarely drafted super high because guys like him are rare.

Right now he’s a 2nd rounder at best but likely 3rd or 4th.

If he comes back and has a dominant senior season he could easily be a top half of the first round guy.

I just don’t see it. Dexter Lawrence had a fantastic year for Clemson and he was picked 15-20 I believe. That would be the absolute best scenario but what happens if he comes back and gets hurt? Hell even just a high ankle sprain could plummet his stock by keeping him out a month. I hope you are right and I’m wrong, I want Shelvin back. I just don’t think it happens. Teams rarely pick 2 down players in the first round and Shelvin is most likely a 2 down only guy at the next level. That’s not at all a knock on him either.

Dude, his uncle has already confirmed on 24/7 that he is coming back, is that good enough?

I think it will always be a multiple 3-4. Typically, you don’t have two 330lb DTs next to each other in a 4-3, LSU has Shelvin, Ika and Guillory all fitting the bill as a true NT.

Regardless next year, they will have the numbers to be extremely versatile up front.

I don’t think we have played with 3 linebackers even on play this year on defense.

Cannot remember a play with 4 lineman with hands in the dirt.

Chaisson has dropped into coverage as he should in certain situations.

So 3 3 5. I guess. It depends on how you classify Stevens and what you call a 4 3.

Shelvin is clearly a nose tackle. Guillory is a nose tackle

Y’all don’t want to see true freshman playing significant snaps on the dline. Look at Bama this year. They sucked even though they are really good.

Agree. Call it what you want and man the base I but we rarely have true 3-4 personnel on the field. It's always more like 5 or 6 dbs technically. Stevens is the rover in a sense. When we go to the package with Brooks it seems there are only 2 actual DL with Brooks actually playing DE.

They have still been using 3 down linemen and 2-gapping up front but in the OU game they were shaded to a 4-3 under look, atleast early in the game they were. I would have to go back and rewatch the other games.

Guillory can do work at 0 or 1 Tech
McKinnley is a beast that can play 0,1,3,4i
Roy can play 3,4,5
Taylor is your classic 5-Tech
Gaye looks like a 5 that you can also bump out

If Dave Aranda ever does leave...I would like to transition back to a 4 -3. That’s just my opinion ...that’s just how I was raised

Don’t get hung up on 3-4 vs 4-3. We are multiple and will have 1/2 the line playing like a 3-4 one gap concepts while the other half plays 4-3 attack style.

It is what the NFL has been doing for the last 10-15 years.
