Texas sun can cook these things while they’re young. If you can get them through a whole summer in the ground without looking like Charlie Brown’s Xmas tree, then they’ll take off the next year.

I made a post about these several years back with before and after photos at my old house. They were planted about 2-3 ft high and were spiking past 7-8 ft tall within a year. It was on shady side of house too. They worked great for why I wanted them. Probably great option for you too as others have stated.

We had a landscape crew that would maintain them. We kept them around 6ft or so. But they definitely had more than 8ft + potential.
