Yellow Jackets more common in an urban setting?

I grew up in a rural area. I don't remember finding any yellowjacket nests close to the house. My parents weren't well off either. There were plenty of cracks and crevices for a nest to start in.
Moved to a urban area where my wife is from. Physically very close to neighbors. First summer we moved in there was a yellow jacket nest in the backyard I burned out no problem. This summer I just discovered a yellow jacket nest in a wooden pillar on the front porch. The main entrance is a crevice in the base of the pillar. I obviously can't burn this one out and I don't see how I could hit the nest with boiling water/soap mixture. I think I'm going to have to hire a professional for this one.
We don't have very many flowering plants, there is no trash in the immediate area, and where garbage pickup is I'm not having the problem. Is this just something I'll continuously have to be dealing with living in an urban area with an old Victorian house?
I'm in Western PA.

They really do exist pretty much everywhere, rural or urban.

Their underground nests are the worst. Especially when you unknowingly run right over the top off one with a mower. I was stung eight times that day.

Happened to me yesterday in the Philly area. Got hit 4 times. I dosed them with the Tempo 1% dust last night so hopefully they all dead when I get home tonight. I hate the underground ones so much.
