Bingo!!! This is what I do. When we bought our house, I didn't deal with the knees until they were pretty big and it was a pain in the arse. Now I stay on top of it and nip them on each side with a lopper as soon as I see them coming out of the ground and it is so easy. My tree hasn't died yet, but wouldn't care if it did. I hate the knees. I hate the leaves, branches, and cypress balls that I have to clean out of my yard every year.

I asked about removing them from my yard last year and this was the recommendation here. Worked like an absolute champ. I cut out about 70 of them using about 8 blades up. Some of mine were 6" to 7" round. .

Friend of mine had this problem with his own Cypress Tree. Had about 60 different knees poking up, so he went around with a can of neon orange spray paint and circled each knee. Then he went to Home Depot and rented a small stump grinder for 4 hours. He got rid of each knee and the stump grinder cuts about 6 -7 inches below the ground so it will be quite a while before he has problems with them again.
