My son cutting the grass this evening informed me of a potential issue... water running like a faucet out of the hot water drain on the side of the house.
I went into the attic and nothing was leaking, but I could hear the water pouring from the valve... I shut off the main valve to the water heater and, as expected, the hot water pouring out stopped.

Faulty relief valve? That’s my guess, but anything else I should look into?
And is this a DIY job or one best left to the professionals?

Thanks

Definitely a DIY if it is faulty RV just don’t break it or strip the threads. Use Teflon tape when you reinstall the new one RV. Should be a quick easy fix.

Be careful if it is electric.

When you turn the water off, the level can drop below the level of the elements. They are usually in the water and heating it.

So when you do the repair, unplug the heater. Then when you are done, purge the air out of it by running the hot water until it stops burping air.

Then you should be safe to plug it back in.

Aas it might be totally empty and possibly too late already.

If the heating element is gone (doesn't heat up) it can also be replaced. They make an inexpensive tool (wrench) for that.

It'll be ok as long you don't see the heater sitting in rusty water. Which would mean the bottom is rusted out. Enjoy saving the hundred(s) with an 's' as water heater's have gotten quite pricey.

I turned the gas off at the same time I shut the inflow off.

Went to HD and picked up a new relief valve...plan is to drain it in the morning and replace it before the wife wants a hot shower! Lol
Watched a YouTube video and definitely doesn’t seem too bad. I just hope that’s the issue and this will resolve it!

If valve is on top, no need to drain.

And being gas, you don't have to worry about burning out an element.
