Read that article above about root stocks taking over. If you're not positive that the grafted plant died, then give it several more years.
Years ago I read that citrus usually stink on the first few crops. They get progressively sweeter through about the 6th year. This has held true for every citrus I've grown and all my friends have grown.
For Satsuma season here in zone 8b/9a they are usually juicy enough but a little sour by mid/late October. Once November hits & we get a few weeks of temps in the 40s they are perfect.
