As other have said, sod webworms.

Act fast they can destroy your lawn with the quickness. Like a few days and half the yard will be brown.

How small are the moths? I’ve noticed a bunch of small white moth-like bugs that fly when I walk through the grass. When I say small I mean tiny…like maybe 0.5cm or less. Haven’t noticed any damage to blades of grass or browning or larvae.

Had a big brown spot appear in my lawn and noticed a few moths as well. Went after with the Bifen XTS a couple weeks ago. No more moths and it looks like the damage has stopped spreading. I treated it again this week just to be sure.

These were all about a half inch or so small white moths that flew up from ground level as I approached (approximately a centimeter plus).

5mm gets to be exceedingly small. They were bigger than that.

Talstar P hit it now

Update:
Original post was on August 18th. Saw probably 30+ small white moths that day. Hit the yard with Talstar 2 days later.

Last week when I mowed, I saw maybe 7-8 moths still.

Just finished mowing again today and saw one single moth. Grass still looks good. I don’t see any noticeable damage. Hopefully that did the trick.

Thanks

I put down Bifen granules mid-July. I see the moths but could the granules kill them? It says it treats for sod webworms. I put down a 25lb bag over roughly 10k sq/ft. I know it's been a good bit of rain, but it hasn't been 2 months since insecticide either. Thoughts?

Not to hijack the OP, but I treated my yard with BAYER CROP SCIENCE 700280B Complete Insect Killer about a day before we started getting rain everyday. The label says can withstand rain after down for an hour. Now after a few weeks of rain I see a few moths and am curious if it mainly ran off and if it is safe to treat again? Or maybe with something else?

First relax and stop putting down bifen/Talstar. It may or may not rid you of webworms.

Instead, get some Anderson’s Duocide and keep that on hand. IF you see grass damage (walk the lawn each evening) put it down. This will be the only application you’ll need. It’s worked for me the last 3 years.
