200 amp main panel is 175’ away from my 100 amp subpanel. 60 amp double pole breaker in my main to feed the subpanel. I have 3 20 amp circuits and 1 15 amp circuit on my subpanel. I’ll never get close to drawing 100 amps. My double pole 60 amp breaker in my main seems to only fit up to 3AWG (THQL2160). Should I change the breaker and go 2224 direct bury or can I go a little smaller?

4awg 175’ 60a is 5% drop at 120v and half that at 240v. That is pretty much ideal.
6awg is 4%/8% and while some would find that quite tolerable, others would not.
Really depends on what you plan on running. If all 120, you may opt for a bigger neutral if you’ll be close to 60a often.
If it is HVAC or pumps that run several hours a day, larger wire would help with energy bills substantially. Some power tools may be able to use that extra few volts to peak a little higher before stalling.

Won’t be running much continuously an no big compressor or welder. So you would go 4446 aluminum SER?

4446 copper ideal. Not sure about aluminum probably 2224 but I’m not familiar with it.
Going a size down won’t hurt anything in your case either as long as your plans never change.

10-4, went ahead and ordered the 2224 MHF with some reducing terminal pins to fit the breaker. Appreciate your help.
