If you're still going with a push mower, consider EGO or Greenworke that has at least a 7.5 Ah battery.
If you're continuing with gas, Toro is still reliable. Last weekend I pushed my dad's Craftsman mower, one of the newer models. Ran well but I wasn't a fan of how the self propel functioned in terms of control placement.

Sounds like a loose belt. Also you can pop open the gear box underneath the mower and check to see if maybe the grease hardened over time. If it’s hard that could also be a problem. As far as leaking oil I have no idea. I own a toro self propelled. This one is about two years old. The toro I replaced with this one was probably about eight years old. The frame rusted out on my older one is why I had to replace it
