My main two areas to target for upgrading include adding some window shutters and replacing the front columns. The front columns are starting to rot at the base and the style is dated. My current thoughts for the upgrade are:

Dark brown painted wooden shutters to match the door. Open to different shutter styling.

Remove banisters and replace columns with wider square columns, white in color. I’m looking to go with either PVC or fiberglass on the new columns. I’m thinking PVC since I could replace the existing columns with some basic load bearing wood posts and then wrap them with the PVC.

Looking for any thoughts, suggestions, expertise on the color/styling for the upgrades as well as the best course on material and installation for the columns.

Any insight and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

This isn't a great picture but here's a style I like on a remodel we just did. I like the wood columns with a black plate base. Dark stain. Used cable bullet rails (also used them for the interior star rails).

I don't think you'd want to go that dark on stain but you could use the wood posts and then build some wood shutters and stain them the same color as your posts.

Going with a new color on your siding, garage door, and soffit/fascia would go a long way too.
