I just built a flagstone patio this past weekend. Used huge flagstone pieces, 150-200 pounds each. I'd say the biggest thing is to make sure the sand underneath is packed in good to prevent the stone from coming up when its getting stepped on. Thickness of the stones make a difference too. Putting extra sand under thin stones and less under thick ones so the patio is as level as possible.

You mind posting pics? We’re considering doing something with big arse flag stone and dwarf mondo grass in the seams.

We did a flagstone walkway, used huge pieces, foundation was the previous limestone walkway, then about a 4 inch layer of sand, held together with long metal strips. It’s been in place 12 years has not budged. I love flagstone because it doesn’t get slippery.
Planted liarope for the border.
Also get some bags of crushed granite to fill in between stones
