When mine broke a couple years ago I briefly considered replacing it myself. After watching the guy do it, and for as little as it cost, I'm glad I didn't. The process was pretty simple but the "penalty points" were way too high for my liking.

This summer has been a bitch in terms of repairs and problem trees I’ve had to get removed so I’m trying to cut costs wherever possible. Just got home and my motherfricking AC is froze up.

That’s was my thread in the OT. I ended up doing it myself. Bought the springs from overhead door, and picked up the 2 “tools” while I was there. It wasn’t as unsafe as some tried to say. Just take your time and pay attention.

An little increase in wire size won't matter if you replace both at the same time. The different wire size will matter as they coil up to provide energy. The rotations and coil strength will not be the same no matter what you do. Door is always going to be pulling up harder on one side that the other.

Might not be big deal but it isn't going to be balanced.
