Digging through asphalt for fence posts

Starting a fence this weekend and looking for help tips on breaking through asphalt. I think the slab/depths is only around 2-4 inches.
Was thinking of renting a hammer drill, drilling a few holes and then using a chisel bit to bust all the way through.
Anyone done this or have experience?

You may not need a hammer drill. If I were renting a tool I would go with a small jackhammer with a chisel bit. I rented one to tear out old floor and wall tile in an old bathroom. It has the thick mortar and chicken wire behind it. Did the whole room in a couple of hours. Rented it at Home Depot. What are you planning on using to secure the posts? Going with concrete or trying to use asphalt again? I would get some post hole shovels and go at least a foot deep from the surface and use concrete and maybe top it with asphalt if you can. But that’s just for looks.

You might try diesel in a center hole the day before. When I worked around paving, any kind of solvent would ruin the new pavement. It essentially dissolves the asphalt binder Leaving the sand and gravel behind. I’m not sure if the effect is similar on older pavement.
You could also burn it out with a torch but have some water or fire extinguisher close by.

This. Get you a 4" PVC coupler, put it over were you want the hole. Then put a shite load of putty around the outside to seal. Pour in a cup of diesel. Diesel will get the asphalt soft to were you can dig it out.

Good shite guys, much appreciated. What kind of putty should I be looking for? Don't want to f the whole driveway up with spillage.
