busted water line to home

so riding home yesterday afternoon I get a text from the neighbor saying my front yard is a lake.
get home and the part of the old galvanized pipe that was left, yea it was repaired with pvc some time back, was gushing water from a hole in the bottom of it...
was able to get some help and dug up the bad spot. like before it had a hole in the bottom of the pipe...
water company came by and, since it was dug up was able to put the new connection at the meter (everything is industrial pex now) and jumped the bad spot out from the meter to the good section of pipe.
should I go with it or have the run replaced with pex all the way to the home?...

I would not feel comfortable going on vacation knowing I'm relying on the same old galv pipe that is obviously in bad shape. You'll be on the hook for the water that comes after the meter obviously. Depending on how long its takes for someone to find and shut it off at the meter it could be hundreds or thousands.
I'd get some estimates on how hard and how much it would be to finish it with pex to inside. If its really expensive then might be best to just take your chances. Id also look into getting your own valve installed by the meter so you have your own shutoff.

I can shut it off no problem...good point on being out of town and it goes...
I have a plumer coming over to give me a cost on replacing with pex to the home...
it's only 35' or so...

Thats good. Some of those older meter valves are almost impossible to turn. I've twisted shutoff keys made of 5/8 rebar before. Some water co's don't want customers using the companies water valve....I've heard, never actually had them bitch about it.
The tie-in point is probably what will decide on the cost. Having to go under a slab and bore a hole in the concrete is going to cost a lot more than a raised house. Stuff like that.

found where the water line goes into the slab...
it was right under the hose bib in the front of the house so it's accessible...
goes from 3/4 galvanized to copper...total run of pex is going to be 40'...

We had same burst, and same decision to make, and we had the whole run replaced.
