I have a ventless and it smells terrible when lit. I’ll never use it because of that.

That’s what I thought but nobody does it. Wood burners only services what they’ve sold and I have no idea where this one came from.

When they get dusty they will smell when lit. Since we only light ours every 4 years, I take it apart and go to town with the brush part of the vacuum. This stopped the smell for me.

We had a leak in our vented gas log valve last winter and had to replace the gas logs. We switched to new ventless gas logs and it puts out so much heat, we can't even use it more than a minute or it will probably start melting the paint off the mantle. I think I am going to have to pay someone to custom build a metal heat shield to direct the heat more away from the mantle. Even then I don't think we will be able to run it very long without overheating our very open great room. It's ridiculous how hot these ventless logs get. We may have to switch back to a vented set of gas logs. Any solutions I might not have considered to protect the mantle and scale down the heat? Maybe I should just open the damper to some degree?
